re: Metal ring for a 20ft yurt

So here is an update to my prototype 20ft permenant yurt with Metal ring design.

The title of this thread is a typo. It’s should say 20ft.

I set up the ring in my workshop with a couple of...

re: Metal ring for a 20ft yurt

Yes I have lost a few rental yurts at events to wind. We always tie them down, but we have had some big winds. I’ve split a few rings and broken lattice, but the beauty of a yurt is it’s easily...

re: Metal ring for a 20ft yurt

For Roof rafters, I will be using clear Vertical Grain Doug Fir. No knots. It’s really tight grain, beautiful and expensive, but incredibly strong. You are right about knots though
The way big...

re: Metal ring for a 20ft yurt

Can’t believe it’s been a year since I last posted about my metal Ring. It’s been through a few iterations, but I think I’m getting somewhere now.

I hope to raise my first “Permenant Yurt”...

Re: Grain Bin

I’ve had a plan for many years to buy a Gain Silo and convert it to a small cabin with two floors (mezzanine) and rent it out on Airbnb. I think it would be really cool. Probably spray insulation on...

Re: My quick intro

The reason we wrap the wall canvas around the door post and attach to the lattice on the inside is because even though “boat shrunk” Sunforger canvas is supposed to be pre shrunk, it isn’t. It will...

Re: My quick intro

Yes knot tying is very hard on the hands. I tell customers who make my kits that if their hands are not burning after 30 mins, the knots are not tight enough. I had one customer who was under...

Re: My quick intro

I use 3/16” diamond braid rope. I get mine direct from a rope manufacturer.
You can get colored diamond braid rope at Home Depot and Lowes. Lowe’s is slightly thinner and only inred or green. Home...

Re: My quick intro

I watched the video, nice.
Forget about the yurt, I love all your equipment. That ash is beautiful.
So you already must have got my plans, thanks for the plug in the video.
Interested to see...

Hi Krusty
If you are not looking for something permenant, have a look at my kits and yurt plans, for small yurts they are ideal

Re: Starlink At The Yurt!

I have had mine for about a month or so now and I’m very pleased too. Way better than using a Verizon Jet pack.

Re: Yurt Designs

The only part of this endeavor to make a modular type yurt would be the lattice and perhaps the door frame. You could have multiple lattice wall sections with the big yurts and then remove sections...

Re: Star Cap/Dome Alternatives

The umbrella is really the best solution for a camping yurts as it packs down so small for transport, way better than a 3ft dome which takes up a lot of space.
If you camp in summer you only...

Re: Building from scratch - uni diameter and material types

There is wriggle room for camping Yurts, but not really for permenant yurts, especially if living in a wind or snow area. Local building regulations will have a big say in what you can and can’t do....

re: Metal ring for a 20ft yurt

Hi Charlie
It’s almost done. Having 2 made, one will be for a 20ft yurt with 2x4 rafters and the other will be for 2x6 rafters for 24ft yurts and perhaps bigger.
A friend is making the prototypes...

re: Metal ring for a 20ft yurt

I like the idea of a really thin ring rather than the big block rings you usually see. I’ll weld flanges to the ring and then cut a slit in the end of the rafter that buts up against the ring so the...

Metal ring for a 20ft yurt

Im designing a more permanent yurt than my usual camping yurts and would like to use a sleek metal ring. Has anyone had any experience with this or done it?
I would like to keep it as thin as...

Re: Building from scratch - uni diameter and material types

It really depends on the size of the yurt and what you want to use it for. Is it camping or permanent. Is it 12ft or 20ft.

My camping yurts use 1.5”x 7/8” vertical grain Doug Fir. I use these on...

Re: Roundwood vs Square wood Roof Poles

You didn’t say if this yurt is permanent or just a temporary structure. This will gave a bearing on square v round.
Square or rectangular will be stronger so if you have to think about snow, go with...

Re: Waterproofing Canvas

I would recommend a treated canvas too. We use Sunforger. I’m not a fan of vinyl, but it has sone great qualities like completely waterproof and will last 10-15 years.
If you go the canvas route...

Re: Canvas and materials

Billboard vinyl is a really cheap way to make a quick cover using HH66 vinyl Cement, but it won’t last more than a couple of years at most. I use it a lot for as a waterproof under groundsheet for...

Re: Canvas and materials

I can sell you 10.10oz Sunforger marine Canvas. It’s $7.50 a yard plus shipping.
We also sell the ring domes. They are designed to fit our rings which are 24”, 30” 36” and 48”.

We make and sell...

Re: Pros & cons for high/low walls (lattice)?

My standard yurt is 56” which is very traditional. We do a high wall too which is 66”. But my yurts are for camping so it’s not necessary to have higher walls. The main advantage with low walls is...

Re: Using string for the Khana

I use polypropylene diamond braid rope in my yurts. You can get some cool colors. I seem to remember when I started up my business I checked out nylon, but it stretches more.
Another alternative is...

Re: Q: Which fabrics & qualities for roofs and walls?

You have opened up a minefield here.
My yurts are made with 10.10 Sunforger marine canvas, cotton army duck.
Most permenant yurt manufacturers use vinyl etc
We much prefer the cotton because our...
