Default Question on Yurt walls

Hello,
Currently in process of building a yurt for a trip coming up. The one thing has us stumped is what thread is best for sewing the canvas. We want go with a polyester core cotton wrapped thread but are a little lost as to what brand and strength would be best.

Any suggestions?

I am no expert on thread. However, I used 100% heavy duty polyester on my 17 oz. canvas cover and walls, and a size 18 needle. The heavy duty polester thread (I don't know the gauge or size) from WalMart is fantastically strong and has worked great for the ~ last couple years of constant exposure to sun and weather here in CO. It's the heaviest thread they sell. About $5 per 200 yd spool.

For an entire cover it would be much more cost effective to buy commercial sized spools, regardless of thread type. Good luck with your project.

How many of those 200 yd spools did you need for your 16' yurt cover?

I'm working on sewing up some

insulation

(wool-blend blanket material) and haven't been able to get any thread estimates (aside from the vague 'a lot'). I can find 500-3000 yd overlock/serger spools locally, but would probably have to rewind them...

Thanks!

8 spools maybe? Although the tarp was already stitched, I beefed up every seam, and made a few new ones. I tend to 'overdo' everything bombproof. That's just the way I roll. A pro would likely have used less thread.
