Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

We have a modern yurt, and run a wood burning stove, as well as a forced air propane furnace. We can't open the dome in the winter because once the ice builds up along the edge, it won't seal...

Re: Privacy in loft rooms

There is very little privacy in a yurt. We had our teens in there the last 2 years they were in high school. I think it brought us all a little closer together, for private conversations, they just...

Re: Dome shade solution

Here is a pic of our solution. We got the shade screen on Amazon (Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LBUO22K/?tag=worldwidecreatio), then just cut it larger than our screen insert and...

Re: Dome shade solution

If it is hot enough for that much heat buildup, then the dome is definitely open. It gets way too hot in here to not open the dome.

Re: Ceiling fans for climate control?

That would be fantastic for off grid.

Re: Option for yurt platform "foundation"

We are up by Lake Itasca, so it gets down to 40 or 50 below zero some nights during the dead of winter. We are extremely glad we got the arctic insulation. It comes as 4 layers (the side walls have...

Re: Cost of Yurt Platform Build

Our 30' cost around $10000, but we did a concrete slab, raised the deck above that by ~4 feet, then walled it in and insulated those walls to protect from the -50 degree nights we get sometimes in...

Re: Ceiling fans for climate control?

We initially installed 2 ceiling fans to help circulate the woodburning stove's heat, which worked well, but we added another above our bed last summer, for a total of 3. They are never turned off...

Our blogalog (http://ourblogalog.blogspot.com/2010/07/weve-been-pretty-busy-since-last-post.html)

This is a post where he talks about using the diamond piers. We researched this option when we...

Re: Option for yurt platform "foundation"

There was someone in southeastern Minnesota that had a blog that used these. I'll try to find a link.

Re: Dome shade solution

We got some of that shade screen stuff that blocks 70% of sunlight and put it over our screen insert. We just leave that up all summer so I only have to get up there twice a year. Worked great last...

Re: How's Your Yurt Handling The Cold?

This sounds like your stove just isn't getting hot enough to create the draft. Do you have a thermometer on the stove pipe? (external if single wall, internal for double wall)

If my stove is...

Re: "Real" operable yurt windows

We actually put one in this fall. Our Yurt had a 48" x 36" window (fabric), so we got a 48" x 36" window off the shelf at the home improvement store. I framed it out with a double header, cut the...

Re: Insulation

We have a 30 foot yurt, and use a Hearthstone Castleton 8030 (CASTLETON 8030 | Wood Stoves | Hearthstone Stoves (http://www.hearthstonestoves.com/store/wood-products/wood-stoves/castleton)). It is...

Re: Insulation

The only insulation they list on their website is rFoil... We have the reflective stuff AND the arctic insulation from Shelter Designs, and at -40F it was pretty chilly in there, I had to run a...

Re: Easy Awnings

For each window it cost roughly $20, we did this for 5 total windows, so $100 in parts (and some short PVC lengths left over for some other project), and a couple hours of cutting and cementing.

Re: Easy Awnings

We have had the window awnings up for months now with no issues at all. The big awning for the roll up wall has worked very well too, although, we have to close that if there is any wind at all when...

Easy Awnings

We have a Shelter Designs yurt, but I imagine this would work with just about any yurt that has Velcro fabric windows. All we used was some 1/2 inch PVC pipe, some elbows (and cement), zip ties for...

Re: "Real" operable yurt windows

We do have a full snow kit. What I was thinking is something very similar to the picture, although I was going to build a full header to support the snow leg in the middle of the window just like a...

Re: Yurt Automation

I can't make the assumption that for 7 months out of the year, I will be in the yurt every day. Cabin fever gets the best of anyone! Especially after 3 months of lows ranging from -35 to 0.

Re: "Real" operable yurt windows

I emailed our manufacturer (Shelter Designs) about retro fitting some of the canvas windows with real windows. They currently don't have a solution, but may be working on one soon. We are going to...

Re: Building 30ft yurt

At the lumberyard near me they have a bid called 'select' wood, that has very few knots, and all of them are tiny. You pay about 6x as much per board, but these boards are very nice. Most of the...

A friend sent me this: twobraids: Hacking a Pellet Stove to Work with Nest (http://www.twobraids.com/2014/01/hacking-pellet-stove-to-work-with-nest.html)

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

I totally understand the need to get rid of moisture, that is why we have a dehumidifier in the house. I can't use any of the windows (they are all fabric) in the winter, and the dome is not usable...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

It's funny, we actually tried ALOT of different things. Including:

Mounted a heater upside down to blow warm air up on the dome (like a car defroster)... didn't work, too expensive anyway.
