Smile canvass alternatives?

We are an intentional community in Tofino, B.C. and we are about to begin building the first of a number of yurts. We are very open to discussion on this subject and will even welcome the wonderful, helpful people from here to visit us and stay on the property as our guests anytime you find yourself out here in Tofino. We are working with a very small budget, but labor and expertise are in abundance.

First question: What do you all recommend we use to wrap around the frame, given that we are in the Pacific north-west and need to make the first one for as little money as possible?

Hi, Don't have time to read the whole post and you may have discussed this but I think Canvas with a couple layers of latex exterior house paint is a good alternative cover. You will have to touch up the paint every year or two depending but it should work. Jess

Another way to water proof canvas is to take a gallon can of turpentine and a roller pan and mix in tubes of silicone then just roll it on after it drys the smell dissipates and the canvas has a rubber like coating.

Yeah - I'm thinking that would waterproof toilet paper!

What is the ratio of turpentine to silicone?

I would use one gal to 2 tubes of silicon and stir well during application to keep the mix going.
