I think it is really a question of what you like.

Light bounced off the white ceiling will give you a broader, smoother light, but you will lose a lot of the "power" of your light this way, so you will need more light than if you use a direct downlight.

I'm not sure I remember the formula correctly, but light disburses at something like intensity = one over the distance squared. It counts the distance from the source, so it includes the distance to the cover, plus the distance back to your table top for example.

If your light offers 1000 lumens at the source, 3 meters away is it significantly lessened. (1/9).

But I still like the quality of light from a bounced light.
