Default Musicians and Yurts

One thing I like about my yurt is playing music in it. I play guitar myself and my sons and I will occasionally have a session when at camp. The yurt seems to really distribute the sound well. I think part of it is that the walls are fabric and there is very little to no echo inside.

Anyone else play live music in your yurt? Have you had the same experience as me?

Funny you brought this topic up. I play electric bass, so that's gonna stay in the house. But I'm also an acoustic guitar newb. I was in the yurt last Fri. with my wife and grandkids and was thinking I should bring my git to the yurt and try it out. Maybe tonight after work.

You will be happy with it. Of course, I am thinking the sound quality might change if there are any framed walls, etc, that perturb the sound waves. Let me know how it turns out!

I don't know about making music but I know the stereo sounds incredible in my 30', it seems to act like a giant inverted speaker, bouncing the sound down, no distortion or echo. But the fabric walls do nothing to keep the music inside. If you have neighbors you may want to bear them in mind when you crank it up,but its nice to be able listen to tunes when working in the field.

Nearly a decade late but worth a shot...

Anyone have thoughts on the acoustic qualities of modern/synthetic builds vs traditional/natural builds?
I'm tossing up between a canvas/felt build and a vinyl/bubble build and I imagine the acoustics of the modern style materials are significantly worse. Am I wrong?

That's interesting. If you find out let us know.

I played my acoustic 6 string in my canvas covered yurt a few times. It sounded muted and weak, and totally lacked the punch of playing in the house. Likely the canvas cover did that?

Like playing acoustic on the front porch, very weak sound facing out, stronger facing the house. Indoors is wifes office is where I normally play bass and guitar.

As an aside, the other guitars hanging on the wall here can get obnoxious sympathetic vibration tones ringing out if they are all spot on tuned. I doubt that would happen in a yurt with any kind of cover. Beats me. Just a guess.

Have fun playing.

I am sure there is probably some difference, though not sure how much. After all, most sound rooms where they record music are covered in a foam, so materials definitely matter.

To record 'When the levee breaks' Led Zepplin set up Bonzos drum kit in the lobby of a multi story British hotel. I found that out in a Jimmy Page interview somewhere online.

If you are interested, listen to Bonzos drums echo at the start of the song:
