Re: Where to place a yurt in the forest.
top of hill not good due to wind exposure. back side of hill, no because snow drifts leeward of obstacles. so hidden behind hill expect drifts. open flat place be windy, (that's describes our lot exactly). between trees ok if no tree or branches fall on yurt in wind. Clear them back 20 yards or so. The code here is 30 feet minimum for fire mitigation, and no branches in the bottom dozen feet. I'd consider that a good spot. edge of cliff? lol
An ideal location for a home in windy snowy country is a flat opening cleared in mature forest. Don't site it at the bottom of a canyon if possible, because cold air funnels down at night.
Lastly, look around the property and use your senses. think about the location for your yurt. Consider wind, snow drifting, look for trees and branches blown over, standing water, flatness and drainage if it rains hard. Keep in mind the curved surfaces of a yurt shed wind very well. Anchor your yurt solidly and it will be a good home. Good luck.
