Default What kind of wood stove has worked for you?

Hello-

This is my first post!

We have been living in a 30 ft. Pacific Yurt for 7 years in Indiana and recently had to replace our old wood stove which was a large Blaze Kind model with a catalyst. It really put out a lot of heat! It was old and warped and had several problems so we replaced it with a new one - a Hearthstone Manchester.

The problem is that it doesn't seem to put out as much heat as the Blaze King. It doesn't have the capacity either - so we now have to wake in the middle of the night to stock it.

Our Indiana winters generally are mild, but can get down to 0 F with some wind.

My question is what kinds of stoves have you all had good luck with? What are ones to avoid? Has anyone tried a rocket stove (Ianto Evans) - or a masonry stove? Any other advice on the subject.

I also would take advice as to what has worked (and hasn't worked) as far as insulating methods you folks have tried in the past. It looks like there are some good ideas on this site, I was just curious to get some recommendations.

We just have the regular bubble-wrap type

insulation

and have a wood floor that isn't insulated, but that has a 2 to 4ft skirt that is well insulated around the sides.

Thanks!

I've lived in a 24' Colorado Yurt for five years and I use a Jotul Black Bear stove as my primary heat source. It has a long fire box and if I set the air right It can go all night on one load of wood.

My yurt is just a camp so I am not using anything new. I do however use this forum quite a bit:

Hearth.com Forums Home

If you need to ask any questions about anything about wood, pellet, gas, etc., stoves, then that is the best place on the net.

I would definitely stay with radiant heat though as that is what the bubble wrap

insulation

works best with.

Welcome to the site!
