Default Sizing a wood stove for a 30' yurt on a 3' pony wall

Hi forum! We are putting up our 32 year old 30' foot Pacific Yurt on a platofom with a 3' pony wall. We are deep in a cedar forest about 100" from a cliff overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca in drippy coastal Western Washington. The placement is out of the wind but also retains the morning cold. We are trying to figure out how big a wood stove we need to get. The Yurt is for use as a movement salle, a place for seminars, etc.. but not a lived in yurt. Thank you! P

As a general rule of thumb, we recommend double the square footage. For a 30' foot yurt, that means trying to find a stove that heats 1,500 sq feet. The reasoning is:
  • More volume to heat than the average 710 sq foot room
  • Insulation issues
I am assuming you get a lot of cold/damp weather there and even some snow (depending on elevation). The ability to heat more than you need will come in handy when you need to dry out the yurt. The way I dry out my yurt is to crank up the wood stove and then open the

dome

a bit. If you have an oversized stove, you can do this without feeling cold.

Dear Jafo,

Thanks for the quick reply and thanks for the welcome. That was great advice about the stove and drying the space out. We do get the occasional dump of snow but not every year. It's mostly drippy damp NW coastal weather.

I do have another question; There will be juggling going on in this space, vis a vis the 3' pony wall. But how best to light the yurt so that there's plenty of it in all dimensions and nothing in the way to be bonked by a club?

Thanks,

P

The lighting options are endless. I put a string of LED lights right around the

center ring

and it lights up the entire place. That is the highest place in the structure and LED's are also low profile and much stronger than traditional lighting.
