Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

The painted ring appears to have four layers. I can't quite make out if they cut the mortises before or after assembly. Traditional top bracing and decoration is very nice.

Enjoy the build.

I think I'll chisel the holes into one of my ring layers, then put another (slightly thinner) layer over it; then use plywood for the top wide ring. That way I'll have a comfortable mean to make the holes and also make the whole thing stronger.

How about the wide rim on the posted red ring, how does the owner put the roof tarp over it? Does he just have center hole large enough to pass the whole ring through, then tightens the tarp with some sort of drawstring or something? I'd love to follow this idea, but this is a tough point.

Not too many other guys seem interested in my build.
Anyway, here's a pic of today's continued khana laths staining. Only about 20 left for tomorrow.

Yeah...rather not thinking about about seeing that color on a barrel...I've experienced that too many times at reenacting events...nothing like a damp, misty morning in a tent, when you wake up, check your musket and roar in anger, seeing it wears the "fox camo" now. I'm glad my wheellocks both have non-blued barrel, which in case of extreme rust can be cleaned by fine sanding and polishing, not caring about the blued finish or anything.

Tomorrow we may start drilling and tying the khana. The K-day :D

Wheellocks! .....niiiice! I bought 25 lbs black earlier this year for .54 slow twist Green Mountain barreled ball rifle, .45 Colt Blackhawk and .45 1858 Rem cap and ball. Shootin BP since 1980.

Have fun making the khana.

I have those two wheellocks (carbine and pistol) for reenactment and couple more BP guns for fun and target shooting.

Today's pics:
all laths stained

Drilling fixture, three at a time plus template lath.

All drilled:

Soaking rawhide to make tying straps:

First day of khana tying. Part of it already done, rest will follow.
Tools needed: knife, tightening plate (strap is driven through the hole and the board gives you great leverage and pushing power to really tighten the knot against the lath). Also a "harpoon-awl" to pull the straps through. Quickly forged out of a large nail and simply filed.

Tying continued today. Two of the middle parts done. One of the end parts started.
Improved my technology and tools, so my hands are not all chewed up by pulling the rawhide and such. In short: yesterday I invented a plate with hole. Today I invented a stick. Progress goes forward! :D

We made a full photo documentation of rawhide khana tying today, step by step. I'll post it later.
We finished one of the end parts and the last part only needs the shortened ending laths added. Other than that, khana is finally done. We'll be away for a day or two, hope to finish khana and door frame by the weekend.

The middle parts on the yurt deck.

Both parts placed together, checking if the free-end lath counts fit each other.

Finished end part.

All khana sections are complete. Today we connected them together and tried if we can make the thing into a circle. It works! We may have to add couple laths yet, as it seems to be a bit shorter than we wanted, but we'll see more tomorrrow at daylight again.

Glad you like it. We added four more laths today, which should give the length we needed. I hope to complete the door frame tomorrow.
