Hi gang


Am in Ontario Canada and got the yurt bug. Was going to order a 20' yurt from overseas to get started as a fun hangout place in the woods with friends and a place the kids can play but got to thinking about building from scratch. I have very nice straight and clear ash on my woodlot and a little woodmizer. Might start with a 12' project for fun. Am looking to brain up while I am sawing the lattic and roof pieces. Dont mind if my walls and roof sewing evolve on an annual basis while I learn.

Am an experienced woodworker having built my log and timberframe house myself with handtools. But like anything in life, knowledge is great and hope to learn much here!

Hi Krusty,

great to read that you can find the time for such a project besides your appearances on TV (Simpsons...). :D

In my eyes, it takes good craftsmanship and a lot of experience to make a yurt completely "from scratch" :cool: , but I wish you the very best for it and look forward to when you put pictures of your work steps here in the forum. :)
 
I swear I saw a thread from BobR specifying what he used to joint the lath together....5/16" something but cant find it!
 
Go for it dude. I built all three of my nomadic rustic yurts -12'6", 14', and 15'9" from scratch. It's $$$$ worth it. Enjoy the ride!!

Can you refresh my mind and let me know what you used for the 5/16 cord to connect the lattice pieces? Did a tuneup on my sawmill yesterday and have a nice clear ash log I will saw up this am to see how they look.

I used 1/4 x 20 bolts and nylok nuts on lattice. Bought boxes of a hundred at a bolt supplier in town, not Depot.

Sorry, cordage I can't answer. For sure do 'NOT' use the cheap filament core junk sold at big box stores. It's absolute crap. You need solid braid or maybe paracord.

The pro yurt maker that posts here is 'yurtman', Richard Waters. Contact him. That dude KNOWS nomadic yurts. He will know deets about what cordage to use, and what size hole to drill. Wish I could offer better help. Good luck

Did you use washers on them? Regular flat or fender washers? I see Yurtman has plans so for $20 I will buy a set of plans. Thats a cheap price for wisdom! Well prob equal to $30 canadian pesos. Got my lath milled up today out of an 18" ash log. Will post a video this eve but 75% is nice and clear. Rest will be kindling.

Nicely done. That lath looks great! You're gonna have one tough wall. I suggest you coat it with poly, oil or, as I did, paint it with oil base Rustoleum.

Don't use washers. They will rattle when it is windy. I know that from experience. :D

Leave a small gap between the lattice pieces, or you won't be able to expand it. I know that one from experience as well. :D

If you end up using carriage bolts, grab the bolt head with pliers to keep it from spinning when you run up the nyloks. With ash lath the square lug under the bolt head just might be held tight enough you don't need pliers. LEAVE A GAP!

Frankly if I made another nomadic yurt I would knot it, like Richard does. Bolts are total overkill on a small yurt. Mongolian yurts were knotted from the gitgo and still are today. Plus you don't need to 'gap' the knots. Good luck.

I agree and prefer to use cordage of sorts. Ended up with 140 slats that were knotless. Will cut one more log worth and then cut some rafters. Doug Fir being an ideal NA species to build with, ash has similar strength properties. My woodlot has lots of forest growth ash that is dying so it cost me $3 of fuel for the mill.

Actually have some smaller cherry too I could use but the are maybe only 12" butt logs.
 
Dude you're well on the way to getting your yurt built. Very COOL! Clear ash lath is awesome! I'm def looking forward to build updates. Thanks for joining the forum.
 
I am always amazed at peoples abilities. I am handy but I would not attempt to build my own yurt. The fact that you, Krusty, built your own log/timber frame home with had tools, you will not have a problem with this project.

I have a Ger and it looks like the lattice is held together with leather strips.

I am about ready to start renting my yurt and tiny house combination. I will send out the AirBnb link when I complete it.

Looking forward to seeing your progress. Lots of pictures would be appreciated.

Forget about the yurt, I love all your equipment��. That ash is beautiful.
So you already must have got my plans, thanks for the plug in the video.
Interested to see the rest of the build.
 
I use 3/16” diamond braid rope. I get mine direct from a rope manufacturer.
You can get colored diamond braid rope at Home Depot and Lowes. Lowe’s is slightly thinner and only inred or green. Home Depot have more colors. You need polypropylene and it needs to be soft as the stiffer rope is harder to get tight.
 
have been making progress. hands have blisters from tying knots and will have to redo several as I got them tighter after a while. the wall is a single accordion as I deviated from the plans slightly. still lite enough for me to carry myself. should have thinned out the varnish before applying, would have went much quicker thats forsure. by far the most hateful task so far.

my canvas comes this thursday so would like to have the wood bits mostly finished up by then. weather is nice so have been working for $$ during the day unfortunately. drilling was done in a drill press and was straight forward.
