Re: Would this insulation idea work?

Thanks, Hierony.

I'm pulling the trigger today on purchases. The loose insulation will be loose wool at $3 a cubic foot (600 cubic feet), borate-treated. I'll have an option for the white side or...

Re: Would this insulation idea work?

I'm leaning towards eschewing aesthetics and filling the space between rafters and snow load supports with loose wool insulation for about $3 per cubic foot: R20+ for $1800 plus freight.

I still...

Re: Would this insulation idea work?

Hello!

I'm thinking very similar to you, possibly because I read your post.

Humid air must be stopped from filtering through to the colder outer layers. So, while it would be nice to see...

Re: 30' yurt + insulation layering

Thanks, Corinarose. I had not thought of anything like roxul. That sounds like a great solution if paired with an interior vapor barrier. Is your lattice exposed? Are your snow supports exposed?...

Re: tension cable backup plan?

I enjoyed your response. I hesitated to ramble ignorantly, but my estimation was take the load, multiply by 3 for the rafter angle, divide by 48 rafters, then myltiply by about 10 for the perimeter...

Re: tension cable backup plan?

Great question. Whadaya got?

One could naively say that if you have enough rafters and dense enough lattice, you could tie the whole thing together with dental floss. But the closer you get to...

Re: tension cable backup plan?

Thanks for the reply, Jafo!

I could have a thousand lbs hanging from the rafters with no vertical supports in the center, only suspension wires. I guess I'm asking if you can think of a reason...

tension cable backup plan?

My 30' came with a 3/16" (+ vinyl) 4000lb tension cable.

A snow load can weight 10s of thousands of pounds..

Not only do I notice that some 30' manufacturers supply 1/4" 7000lb cable, but I'd...

30' yurt + insulation layering

I have a 30' yurt on a 2-by T&G platform with a dry bermed, insulated, heated walk-in "crawlspace" basement with barrels of water as a thermal mass. (So I'm not insulating the floor).

I opted not...

Building a platform - thoughts.

Hello!

I'm looking at building a 30' yurt. Before I commit to my footings, here's the situation. I'm trying to minimize the number of footers I need to dig and pour/slipform: I'm down to 12 in my...
