Smile New here - Decorative Yurt Cover

Hello, my husband and I are looking at purchasing Yurts as our retirement home and I noticed that the websites we visited don't offer the pretty decorative yurt covers that the traditional yurts have.

I understand that Mongolian Yurts are NOT the modern type yurts of today, but would like the option of having decorative covers offered. I also realize that the traditional yurt covers are or appear to be one piece as opposed to the two piece offered on the modern yurts.

Does anyone know if there's a company or individual that makes decorative yurt covers to the general public or by request?

Any assistance will be appreciated. Kim

Hi Jafo, thanks for the reply.

I checked

Groovy Yurts

but it appeared they made the covers without "window" openings. Unless I didn't look/read hard enough to see that they would customize.

If they do then they certainly would be our to-go manufacturers. I'll check again.

Thank you

Well traditional yurts do not have windows. Curious to know the answer to that though. Keep us posted.

Yep. I saw that when I looked at their video (Groovy Yurts)

I sent them an email asking if they could customize their covers to a "modern" canvas yurt with windows. If they do, it'll be a boon for they're business, but somewhat expensive for the customer. Especially for those of us that are looking at having half a Yurt covered in windows. But worth it for such beautiful covers.

We'll see what they say. For sure I'll keep you posted.

If you are looking to have designs on the top cover you might check with a local sign shop. They can apply graphics onto the yurt's top cover. Our top cover fabric will also accept latex paint, so a decorative design could be painted onto it.

That's good to know, it certainly makes it an option as opposed to buying an already-designed cover. In addition the cost of having that done may likely be competitive with an already designed cover. I do like options. Thank you.

Hello Jafo. I received a reply from Groovy Yurts. Here it is:

Hi Kim,

It’s really great to hear from you. We do offer different sizes of cover based on your need. All we need is the size that you would need (e.g. size of tonoo, steepness of roof, length of wood rafters, wall height etc). I do want to let you know however that the next delivery (as we just came back from Mongolia this weekend) would be in the Spring. However, it does give you all the time required to decide what kind of patterns and colors you would like for your yurt.

All the best,

Laurence Bérard Groovyyurts Inc

So I'm super stoked that YES they can modify their covers to modern yurts. Yay!
This is a great option that I'm sure to look into very closely.

Thanks again for the heads up.

Hi everyone! Yves here - "gran-puba" at GroovyYurts,

Laurence's answer above is correct and the pricing will be good too. However, because of lead times (2 or 3 shipments a year only for now) and accuracy on a yurt that's not produced "on site", Pacific Yurt's answer (graphic or latex paint on top cover) might be the option to consider. We'll be happy to supply pictures and other traditional Mongolian patterns. It is in my opinion safer to source a complete yurt by the same supplier (unless you build it yourself).

From your e-mail that I read a little late (just got back from Mongolia), I understand that your choice is motivated by your own height, 6' 3''? I understand the concern, although I have lived happily in a 19' traditional Mongolian ger with my 6' 5'' :-) - I stand straight after making one step twards the center. We can custom make almost any dimensions in Mongolia. We also offer now a "super ger" with higher walls and steeper roof pitch.
Hope this helps!
Happy yurting to y'all!
Yves

Have you considered having an artist paint something for you? There are artists in my area that do wall murals like building size wall murals. Or they could do a series of scenes.
