Yurt proportions & golden ratio

Hello folks,

after an long break again a posting from my side.....

I am evaluating some stuff concerning "golden ratio" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio) and believe to remember, that anywhere it was mentioned, that Yurt proportions meet this ratio too.

So I played a little bit around but I came to the conclusion, that Yurts with usual measures don´t fulfill the golden ratio requirements.

But maybe I have used wrong parameters for my calculations.....

Below my results and if you have input I am happy to read!

I used metric system and for easier calculations, a Yurt size of 10 meters (approx. 32 ft).
Sidewall height: 190 cm

Test 1 - standard diameter/height ratio with an roof angle of 30°:

Test 2 - Golden ratio for diameter/height - brought as result an roof angle of nearly 43°:

See now the both results with the golden ratio rectangle measure (blue/red in the background) as comparison:

As you can recognize:
Fulfilling the golden ratio requirements (Test 2) has ugly impacts....

I am not good at this kind of thing but I cannot imagine a yurt looking like that and working out. The weight is supposed to push out, against the cable/rope, not down on the lattice.

I think I used the wrong approach:

It's not the golden rectangle that should be used to achieve the golden ratio, but the "flower of life"!

In the meantime, I have already managed to draw a suitable and good-looking yurt in just a few steps using only the geometric shapes of the "flower of life", i.e. drawing intersecting circles and a few rectangles.

Today and tomorrow I will transfer the result to a drawing program (Inkscape) on my laptop and then show it here. *

GR is near and dear to me. I used the 'rule of thirds' -which is a rough approximation of the GR- in my finish carpentry for many decades. "That mantle really great Bob." GR at work.

Ralex, check into the Fibonacci sequence. 1:2 2:3 3:5 5:8 8:13 etc. Another example. Even what is beautiful in music is related.

Way off topic. The spiral galaxy has arms that appear curved in the golden ratio. So do the the growth bars on a Nautilus shell. In my view the GR is the fingerprint of God.

One more really outside comment on the GR. Watch 'Mornin', the official music video by Al Jarreau on youtube. When Al belts out '..and Touch the face of God' RIGHT at the golden ratio time point in the video length. That right there absolutely blew me away.

Of course. I am very into healing frequencies music and a lot of this stuff is using the Fibonacci sequences.

That is absolutely "ON TOPIC", @Bob. I have seen a lot of hints during my current evaluations.

You are right with:

The video length is 4:21 min = 261 sec.
Taking the value 261 as the total length (a+b) for the GR the result is:

a = 161 (2:41 min)
b = 100 (1:40 min)

The mentioned part is sung exactly between 2:34 and 2:44.

As promised - here are my drawings with Inkscape:

Figure A:

Step 1 (this was the beginning of the drawing) shows the "seed of life" with the black lines.
There are only overlapping circles of the same size.
BTW - if you use several such drawings, you get the "flower of life".

Step 2 was then the auxiliary lines (orange), which I used to divide the outer circle into 12 equal parts.

Step 3 was then the blue auxiliary lines (they connect some line nodes with each other....), which then form a rectangle in the center of the picture.

Step 4 were 2 new, smaller circles in the center of the image (green color). Their size results from the existing geometric figures and the existing lines.

Step 5 were new auxiliary lines, the line nodes with each other (also green color),

In step 6, I removed the orange auxiliary lines to get a better overview.
I only left the large circle in the middle.

In step 7, the blue rectangle in the middle was also converted to orange.

In step 8, the now orange rectangle in the middle was also converted to green.

In step 9, I again centered a "seed of life" with black line color - the size results from the fitting on existing line nodes in the current figure.

In step 10, 2 horizontal lines were drawn inside the former blue rectangle - again using existing line nodes.
These will later represent the cords that are attached around the yurt.

Step 11 was to draw a rectangle in the center of the picture - it will represent the entrance to the yurt.

In step 12, the circles that made up the "seed of life" were removed, leaving only the stylized flower in the middle of the picture (yurt entrance),

In step 13, the colors of the cords were changed.

Final drawing and dimensions:

Finally (step 13), the green circle in the center of the picture and the large black circle that had previously framed the drawing were removed.

Now the most important measurements were also noted and the silhouette of a 180 cm tall person was added to illustrate the size.

That was all the magic - I hope you like the yurt, drawn ("quick'n dirty" ) according to the parameters of sacred geometry.



For me, it fits very well visually, but in practical use in a region where there are high snow loads and the yurt is not heated all the time, I see problems with the somewhat low roof pitch.

Thanks for linking Al's 'Mornin' vid TS. When I first watched it years ago I got choked up when Al belts out "...and touch the face of God!". I glanced at the time bar when Al belted out that lyric, and because I notice GR proportion I immediately knew it was close. I ran the math as you did. Lets just say it was a powerful moment in my life. :tap fist over heart:

As mentioned before in this thread, I am very familiar with music frequencies and I am recommending it to use such a stuff - it has enormous impact on body & mind, if you hear it regularly!
