Yurt Insurance

Talk to your local agent, they will be your best bet in finding a company. Midrox is the company that insured mine. Do they insure in Alaska? I have no idea, but your agent does.

Hi Jafo and all you good yurt-dwellers,

I am wondering if you needed the yurt to be permitted, in order to insure your yurt through Midrox?

Has anyone else had luck insuring their yurt (perhaps as something other than a permanent living space), without a permit?

I'm in Lane County, Oregon; we have an excellent lease arrangement with a landowner who doesn't mind what we build as long as its safe, and does not mind if it is permitted or not - as long as we can take it all away with us when we move on - but we would like to be able to protect the investment we are making on a beautiful 30 foot wood walled yurt!

Any of your experiences, thoughts or ideas very welcome

thanks!

Justin

They never asked me anything about permitting and I saw nothing about it in the policy. Most camps in the ADK's are not permitted, so I can't imagine them having that clause in that kind of insurance.

That's great to hear, I'll post and let you know if Midrox (or someone they can give a referral to) will be able to cover us here in Oregon!
Cheers
Justin

Hi yurt dwellers, I'm currently working on getting my land so that I can build my yurt. I happen to also be an insurance agent in Alaska. I have a company that will insure a yurt. One condition, woodstove has be your secondary heat, you must have propane, electric or oil as your primary heat source. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Jocelyn::email::sginc.com
Happy yurting!

Hi Jafo, as we begin the build on our Yurt, I was wondering about this...did you use a particular agent in the North Country? Could you pass the name on, you can PM me if thats better. Thanks...

Insurance when the yurt is not on the property of a business or primary residence to include liability insurance is definitely a problem. And one that I hadn't appreciated enough before building. It is frustrating that these things are so regional in this era of online businesses. My best quote last year for yurt, outhouse, and 1 acre of land, fire only, value after depreciation, $5000 liability, was $887/y through Lloyds as the underwriter. In the process of repeating search and adding Midrox as a potential underwriter. I hope others continue to update this feed if they find any other solutions.

I just checked my policy and I pay $295 for the year for $25,000 value of the structure, $10,000 for personal property, $300,000 for personal liability. This basically covers everything except snow-load related issues.

$295 is reasonable. $887 is absurd, imo. $5000 liability? What a joke. $300K that's WAAAAY more like it. I have to carry $1 million in my carpentry business. There aren't enough zeros in the hot shots income when they come shotgunning for you.

Midrox will not insure out of New York State. Sorry for the typo, the quote I have from Lloyds is 100,000 liability, 5,000 medical. It is a terrible policy. I can't see any other options. Very disappointing.
