Starlink At The Yurt!

After being on the waiting list for a couple years, I finally received my Starlink dish! For those of you who do not know what Starlink is, it is an internet service provided by SpaceX (Elon Musk). They have been steadily launching hundreds of low earth orbit satellites and currently have about 1,500 of these in orbit. They are not in geosynchronous orbit like the old satellite internet services (like Hughes), rather they are constantly moving. The Starlink dish works with these as they fly by, switching to the next one seamlessly.

I hooked it up and it orientated itself and had internet running in less than 2 minutes. It is simply plug and play, You can see the speed tests I am getting right now.

I mounted it right by my entrance so I can easily take it with me when I leave. It is really nice to have this connection. Now I can spend way more time here.

I really think this is a huge game changer for living off grid or in otherwise remote places. For many people, living without internet is just not an option as a lot of them work online like myself. This opens up basically the entire globe to us now.

So far, it is using between 30-40 watts of power. It does have a heating element but I have disabled it via the app. I don't have a reading yet on how much power it uses when it is one.

I have had mine for about a month or so now and I’m very pleased too. Way better than using a Verizon Jet pack.

I've been on the waiting list since the beginning but we're in Mongolia so it could be a while. They mentioned 2022 and now talking about 2023. It would solve a lot of issues for us. We're internet hogs and live full time in the mountains. We're on the fringe of 4g and I have a 4g booster which makes it tolerable for us but no chance of having a YouTube channel - my dream - due to the low upload speeds. Also it costs us a lot because we pay for data and we use a lot, yet at rubbish speeds.

I can't wait for our system. It would change our lives quite a lot.

Re: Starlink At The Yurt

Did you order it for your Mongolian address, or are you a customer from UK for them?

Mongolian address. I don’t have residency in the UK. My understanding is that it works by location and can’t be moved around. Yet. Has that changed? The Mongolian regulators needs to approve it before it’d work, as far as I know.

Research other options?

Unfortunately we have the best options available in Mongolia already and they are still woeful yet costly. I also had to get a 4g booster plus antenna and stick it on a mast to amplify the signal. We’re lucky we’re within range compared to typical herders who can’t get any signal.

City speeds are decent but we’re 32km (about 20 miles) from the city with mountains between us.

Starlink will be awesome if/when we can get it.

Yes, that was my current understanding too, but your lines was confusing me a little bit. ;)

I guess, that Starlink has their permission to operate its products in the country - otherwise they wouldn´t give the possibility to offer it to customers there.

.... and now talking about 2023

Their map says 2023. Russia & China are deleted from this map... :D

Maybe Starlink needs to solve the security, that the Mongolian accesses can not be used in the neighbor countries RU & CN.

I’m guessing demand exceeds supply for Starlink. Lots of people want it but they can only make so many dishes and electronic components.

It’s a bit expensive for Mongolians budgets but there are enough well-off people who will pay up.

I’m also guessing the big internet providers in Mongolia might lobby against Starlink but they can’t possibly offer an alternative that would offer nationwide coverage. So I doubt they’ll be able to block it.
