Radon protection in Yurts?

My guess would be to not over-insulate. Yurts naturally breath quite well which according to the WHO is the best mitigation method for radon.
If you are hellbent on locking down your yurt with heavy insulation, etc., then you will probably want to look into radon filters.

The front range in CO has hot spots of radon gas. I have worked on a few houses that had radon mitigation installed. All had living area below ground level, in other words, a basement with mechanical room, plus livable area.
I haven't seen a radon mitigation install in quite some time. However as I remember the general procedure was caulking the slab to concrete foundation in the basement, caulking around windows, and venting the mechanical room to the furnace stack.
People DO get lung cancer from radon. I had a non smoking friend that mysteriously got lung cancer and ended up dying from it. The bottom of their tri level home and garage were at ground zero in a prime radon area, mere blocks from where we lived. It's a guess but I suspect radon was the source.
If your yurt is above ground I wouldn't worry about it. There should be no more radon in the yurt than outside, and yurts aren't near as tight as todays energy efficient houses.

Maybe placing a radon detector in the yurt for a few days could give a better sense of whether it’s an issue in that kind of structure.

You could try placing a radon test kit inside the yurt to see if it's an issue — they're inexpensive and easy to use.

Could be worth placing a radon test kit inside the yurt just to check—especially if it’s used year-round. Better to know than guess!

Good question! I’d think testing first is key, then maybe adding ventilation or a small fan system if levels are high.

Hi Thomas. Read my comments on radon several posts up. You are VERY wise to check for radon. If you find you have it, I highly recommend getting it mitigated. ASAP. Good luck.
