Myself (48 yrs old) and my girlfriend (45 yrs) will be purchasing land in Saskatchewan and building a yurt. This is not immediate, it is for april 2016 but we are very thorough in researching and studying all aspects.

We had land that we built a tiny house on and it was a total success. We are now going to more to doing a yurt that we will live in year round.

Just wanted to say hi and forewarn that there will be a barrage of questions coming lolol

thanks

Welcome to the site.

If you are not building it from scratch, and assembling a kit, I suggest a yurt package from one of the reputable manufacturers on this site. I also suggest sticking with one of their standard floor plans so your yurt isn't 'one off' custom. That's asking for slowing the project down, adding cost over runs and headaches. I'm a pro carpenter btw and see BIG cost over runs like clockwork on 'one off' customs.

We will be purchasing the 32 foot Yurt package from Yurtz by Design on the West Coast in Canada. We will also be purchasing every available option for it to keep it warm and dry.

There will be definitely be no one off floor plan for us. We are both from the school of follow the most standard keep it simple plan. The unique part can be done when furnishing it and anything else to the interior.

appreciate the input,...thanks :)

I read a lot about building a small Yurt first before tackling a big one. Being that we are buying a 32 footer from a company and all that goes with it, does this theory also apply to me? Im confident in my building abilities and would like to go right into the 32 footer but will follow the advice of experienced builders on here first

You are paying them. Let them do their thing. If you want to read 'how to build a yurt from scartch', I'll suggest you google:

Clan yama kaminari yurt

Click on yurt build on the main page. I've scratch built two yurts, a 14'er and a 16'er, and that is the basic plan that got me going.

cool thanks Bob

what i would like to see, cause i havent found it yet, is the layout of these concrete piers for a 32 foot yurt platform. This is what I will most likely use.

Buy a few pallets. lol Draw out your frame on 1/4" graph paper to scale. Figure your joists on 16" centers for 3/4" ply, or 19.2" centers if 2x flooring. (Not T&g). If 2x4s no more than 4' apart. If 2x6s, no more than 6' apart.

I have a 2x4 frame with 2x6 deck boards. My joists are on 19.2" centers. I placed my pads 3' or less apart and have 47 under the 16' deck frame. You're gonna need a whole lot more than that bud.

If your site is flat, you could do a 2x frame laid atop a 4" thick circular gravel pad, and insulate beween the framing with insulfoam board a lot cheaper, and a WHOLE lot less labor messing around leveling and aligning 100 free standing piers.

More typical of a 'standard' yurt frame using the same piers.
