Lockable Door Handles

Hey all! Great Fourm.

I am in the process of putting up a yurt for personal use and eventually for vacation rental. I am running into a problem figuring out what kind of lockable door handle to put on the doors.

It is a Groovy Yurt and there does not seem to be enough space on the lock stile to drill a 2 1/8 inch hole for a standard lockable door handle. I would prefer not to use a latch and lock system and I would like to be able to close the door using a standard type door handle.

Has anyone figured out a way around this?

Thanks

Chris

Off topic. I installed a deer shed for a handle and a barrel bolt inside. Outside, a gate latch with hasp and a lock. Steves rig is nicer though.

If you want a standard residential lock, you need a door that has standard sized stiles in the 4" width, by 1 3/8 or 1 3/4 thickness. If none of that works you need to get creative. Go to Depot or Lowes and browse their hardware. All manner of gate latches will work, none of it convenient like modern locksets however. Good luck.

I have a regular door-knob with a lock that I bought at a hardware store -- neat as that is, it doesn't flat-pack well - it sticks out by several inches on both sides. So the knob and mechanism have been gradually loosened in transport/storage/setup and now it's jankey.

I was looking at RV door latches for building my next door -- anyone have other flat-packing door handle/latch suggestions? I rarely lock it from the outside, but like having the option.

I recently put the yurt up and used one of the door handles that Steve suggested. It works great. You have to lock it with a pad lock but being able to use it like a regular door handle from either side was my main concern and it works perfectly.

And they are inexpensive. I only paid $16.00 each with less than $6.00 shipping.

Thanks Steve
