We are buying a yurt to set up as our full time home, with many people using yurts as vacation homes or weekend get aways this poses a bit of a bump for us when it comes to electricity. (Also living on the West Coast we don't have sun consistant enough for me to feel warm and fuzzy in solar panals) We have electrical an hook up so it isn't a rush, we would rather take a little time and find the very best. Has anyone tried wind power, or hydro power ( we have a small creek ). If my perception of solar power is incorrect please let me know!
 
Are you in the Pacific North West where it basically rains all the time? Does the creek freeze?

I have never used hydro or wind myself, but out of the two I think hydro would be the one to look into as long as the creek doesn't freeze up.
 
We are pacific south west, the creek runs the majority of the year it needs to be opened a little deeper and wider and it should run all year unless there is a drought. It's never cold enough here to do a proper freeze most I've seen is a very thin layer of ice on the top.
 
If it were me then, I would look into hydro power for sure, especially if you have a backup. I have seen some setups on youtube where they generated so much power, that several homes were run on the generators and everyone pitched in for maintenance costs.
 
Those alternative energies follow a lot of development this days, great inventiv new stuff coming out mostly from passionate people...

One guy created a sphere (bowl) that looks very interesting, can even get power from moon at night...

Solar solution as foldable sheet type materials as well coming...

Regarding hydro, there is a car manufacturer that makes car running on compressed air. The compressed air is scheduled to be made out of the flow of rivers and wheels...
