Does anyone have experience building an earthen or cob floor for their yurt? We have been going round and round about foundations. We know quite a few people here who live in cob houses. I love the floors and My Yurt will be an art studio . I need warm floors.

Sounds like a good idea maybe you could also do a rocket stove with bio mass heating. you can check you tube for videos on rocket stoves, and how to build.

An adobe or cob yurt platform can be built in much the same way as a concrete platform. If you incorporate a ring of treated wood or Trex type of material that is anchored into the raised platform you can "backfill" the area within the ring with virtually any material. You still end up with a raised circular platform, onto which the yurt can anchor using the standard hardware.

Yes, just be SURE that the yurt can be securely anchored to the floor. It's only as strong as it's weakest point :)

I was playing around with a yurt one year and i put it up with out wall covers just to see if i could keep it in one place and see how the roof cover would do. what i did to anchor the whole thing was i got some of those cork screw things you use to tie your awning down in wind storms and put one every 6 ft just outside the lattice and ran a rope down through the lattice, hooked one end to the anchor and the other to the a rope that i ran through my roof trusses. Never moved an inch.

I did set up on the ground for a while but didn't do anything fancy.I would recommend a good vapor barrier to help keep mold down. I think if i where to do it again i would place it over straw bails with a wooden floor on top with a sheet of plastic between the floor and bails.
