Building a Yurt

I did post some pics under "nightcap" but I must have answered the random question wrong while signing up and it got locked out for posting comments or even replies. I'll get some more pics as I continue the crown. I am experimenting on a new way to do it and if it isn't a huge disaster I'll post a pic or two. :)

The jig turned out to be GREAT! I know, it sounds like i'm bragging, but it really made short work out of notching the crown. I got it all glues up and sanded. Now I guess i will do some wood putty and paint. I'm thinking red. I think a red door and crown. The rafters fit nice and snug. Now I just need to cut out all the bazillion slats for the walls.
 
I have enough slats cut out to build one of the wall sections. So I will post some pics as it goes together. I try and cut up a 2x6 a day.
 
Hey Kevin if you are going to bolt it together. I get my bolts from tractor supply you can buy them by the pound and its cheaper than by the little boxes from other hardware stores.

One thing I noticed is that it takes a fair amount of force to get the kana to bend to the 12' radius. Is this normal? Also a bit of creaking?
 
Yes, on a 12' diameter yurt bind is normal, especially on khana lattice that isn't steam bent.

Why? Take a look at one of the lattice strips once erected. See how much it twists from top to bottom? If you have your khana postioned so the lattice crosses form squares, not diamonds, you have the maximum twist. Not only does it twist, but the knoted cord at the crosses makes the lattice bind against eachother. The little bit of slop in each knotted cord joint is taken up by the twisting force. In a bolted frame, like mine, there is no give and the bind is even worse.


Don't worry. In time the khana will loosen up somewhat as it takes on the installed shapet.

Thanks. It was quite scary. Thanks for easing my worries. My hand are a tad sore this morning but I think I will go out and work on it some more.

I think I did as well. I put 3 laths on and when I cut off each one to fit, I flipped it around to the other side of the wall. I wasted next to nothing doing it this way. I'll upload the pic I Photoshopped when i get home from work.
