Re: Vapor barrier on deck

The standard way in Sweden is, from the inside -> out

1) T&G flooring

2) Plastic vapour barrier (the stuff I use is guaranteed for 50 years). 600mm overlap between rolls. This keeps the...

Re: Yurt in northen Scandinavia: Tips?

Indeed. However we are on the west coast where the climate is pretty similar to say Portland, Oregon. We very rarely get more than about 20cm of snow.

The very north of Sweden is 1500 km from here...

Re: 30ft Yurt

You might want to ask Findhorn (http://www.findhorn.org) if Galen still has his 24' Pacific Yurts yurt erected. That's up in Scotland.

You're welcome to come look at ours...

Re: Yurt Dome Insulation Install and Condensation

What we've observed is that it works well to allow natural convection to transport humid air to the top of the yurt, and then extract this mechanically and re-use the heat while expelling the moist...

Re: traditional yurt corkscrewing prevention

During a Force 10 storm last winter we noticed the dome starting to rotate, and one of the rafters fell out.

We attached four steel cables to eyelets on the crown, installed 2 x 4 rafter...

Re: Yurt Dome Insulation Install and Condensation

Here's (http://www.greenstones.se/en/category/yurts/) how we solved the condensation / insulation problem in our six yurts.

Hope it of interest.

Re: How thick of insulation between Lattice

We used 100% wool carpet pad in Scotland. It rotted within 3 months despite having no direct contact with the rain, so if you've got a maritime climate you may want to reconsider.

Re: High platform

We've got one of our 24' yurts on a 3m high platform bolted to the rock. We've had to put in significant bracing and double joists (2 x 8) to create enough stability. We've also added some steel...

Re: Yurt: 2X6 Tongue and Groove Flooring

We use 25mm T & G here in Sweden for our platforms, and it works well IF you take care of it. Never, ever let it get damp or you will have serious problems when putting it together. And never trust...

Re: insulating the roof and CONDENSATION?

Normally in Sweden the 'right' way to build is:

- Outer cladding (panels / bricks etc)

- A vapour barrier (Tyvek or similar) to stop the wind but allow moisture to escape from the insulation to...

Re: Laurel Nest Yurts

From what I've heard that might be a wise move :)

We've bought yurts from a number of supplier, and Pacific Yurts have turned out to be head and shoulders above the rest. Both their product and...

Re: On grade versus sunken piers

They're pretty standard in Sweden and available at any builder's merchants. No idea where (if) you could get them in them elsewhere.

Re: On grade versus sunken piers

We've got lots of granite in Sweden. I simply bolted my platform posts to the rocks using a rock drill and some special shoes that have a piece of rebar welded to them. Drill in 30cm 22mm hole, pop...

Re: insulating the roof

As far as I'm concerned an insulated platform is an integral part of a year-round yurt. No insulation = summer tent!

We're going to not only super insulate the next one (220mm Earth wool) but this...

Re: Dome Insulation Install and Condensation

It's starting to get cold here (well, it is Sweden after all) and we too are working on winterising our yurts. After the last gale off of the North Sea we realised that we had to do something to...

Re: A bathroom hangup

The Biolet is called a MullToa in Sweden, which is where it comes from originally. We've got three of them and they work just fine. They do require some care and the right conditions however. Also,...

Re: Yurt Newbie - Looking for semi-permanent living in a camping yurt?

Of course it is, the Mongols have done it for centuries. It all depends on your requirements for comfort, hygiene (and possibly longevity!).

The minute you want to stay warm, dry and reasonably...

Re: Insulation for full time living in Uk

I have no experience of off-grid I'm afraid. We used mains electrics for both ventilation and lighting.

Re: Floor insulation?

Depends a bit on your climate. If you're near water you'll benefit from, at the very minimum, a damp proof membrane (sorry, no idea what Americans call it) to keep the moisture (read mould) out.

Re: Insulation for cold places.

It does get complex. To be honest I'm not convinced that felt is ever going to work in a Western European (read: damp) climate. Mongolia is much drier.

The foil works fine, and some other...
