Default 30 ft. yurt snow damaged

Although this yurt has a snow load package, I failed to clear off the roof because I was preoccupied trying to clear my driveway. I would recommend putting up a center post in the snow season that can quickly be removed.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see a pic, who the manufacturer was, what upgrades you had or location... can you share that info? Mahalo!

Looks like 2X6 rafters with uprights but I cannot tell what brand it is. Could you tell us how much snow was on your roof when this happened and what part broke? The

center ring

?

I don't see any of the typical corkscrew preventions... cables... Corr brackets... It looks very much like a corkscrew scenario, where the ring and rafters start to twist and the pegs dislodge and the whole thing comes spiralling down. I don't even like to deal with pegs anymore on the rafters. Give me BOLTED rafters at that ring, no less with all that weight up there...

I also dont see 2x4 attached to the rafters-- no snow load package there
Like Melissa said-- looks like corkscrew issue there
I will take my metal brackets bolted to the 2x4's and the and the rafters bolted to the

center ring

any day.
Living in the yurt in the winter the heat inside helps to melt the snow off the roof~which helps alot. Sounds like the whole thing is collapsing at first but you get used to the sound

It appears that the center ring shattered. The rafters came straight down once the ring broke. There is no swirled pattern in the rafters that would suggest any type of torque or twisting. Some segments of the center ring that are visible do not appear to have any splintering or broken wood fiber suggesting that the lamination came apart and the ring did not have bolt reinforcement.

Would the ring getting wet frequently cause this?

It could if the glue used was not meant for applications where

moisture

could be present. You won't have to worry about any glued joints or the center ring on your Pacific Yurt since it has an exterior glue as well as though-bolts for reinforcement.

No worries with a Surely Yurt either. With our yurts this spiral twisting issue simply doesn't occur, the opposing forces of the pentagonal hub prevent any twisting. The sub-rafters are not only pinned in with a 4" stainless steel dowel but also an 18 ga. galvanized steel strap at the top of each one holds them tight to the mortised purlins.
