Default Local Yurt Manufactuer: Surely Yurts

As some of you know, I went on vacation last week and went up to my yurt camp for the week. In my town every year, they hold the Woodsmen's Field Days. It is a great time, but for locals it can be a bit crazy just because our sleepy little town is suddenly jammed packed, so little things like going to the store become hard to do. I thought this a good time to be out of town and up at camp. Well, wouldn't you know it but a local yurt craftsman came out of the woodwork and actually had a display there! The company name is

Surely Yurts

. My aunt who happened to be there starting sending me pics:

They are located in Taberg NY, which is very close to me so I hope to catch them again some time and will also be inviting them to join here. I want to get in there and see that

center ring

design they have. I wonder how it affects the load distribution on the rafters?

Is that a size of yurt they sell, or an itty-bitty demo of what yurts are? It'd be a nice bath-house addition

They sell up to a 20' yurt (according to their site). I have yet to have a conversation with them, but YES, that is a great idea!

This is also a pretty interesting feature: "No-Tool-Setup"

Magna-Mount System
Quote:
"In the past, we found ourselves having to bring along a cordless drill to fasten our skylights to the peak of the roof using screws. Not anymore. Now our skylights slide right into their mounting brackets being held fast by 3 super-strong magnets. Now our 10 foot yurts can be setup and taken down using no tools. In addition to simplifying the setup the magnetic mounting system allows the skylights to be taken on and off for ventilation and easy cleaning!"

You know, sometimes I feel like technology is nothing but a foolish and prideful pursuit of humanity's hubris. Then someone comes along with an ultra-practical use of wickedly strong magnets, and I think ok, maybe it's not all flash and glamor.

This has me thinking though, I bet there are more local yurt manufacturers around each of us than we know!

And each of them can bring their own creative ideas. I appreciate the image Surely presents of flexibility and service like the options of wooden rain barrels, use of aromatic woods, construction of platforms and stuff.
I guess as a new company they'll need to back it up well.

Default Surely Yurts - Introduction to Yurt Forum

What a lovely forum you have built! Thanks for seeking me out and posting pictures of my display yurt! There should be more people like you out there
That is me pictured to the left. My name is Steve Reed and I just built a

yurt workshop

in Taberg, NY last spring. I have been traveling for about the past 7 years living in Australia, Alaska, British Columbia (Design School), Vermont etc... in a yurt
This week I am in Maine camping with my new friend Bill Coperthwaite. Any of you yurt forum folks have any questions for Bill? For those of you that don't know he built a yurt at Harvard while in doctoral studies there. Bill is 'the man' when it comes to yurts and I am up here learning some of his amazing design concepts and the like.
My next big project is a 40 foot post and beam yurt for a yoga studio up in Maine. Of course, this is not a moveable yurt but it will feature a beefed up version of the roof rafter design as you see in the pictures of my 10 and 20 foot yurts.
Please don't hesitate to email me or keep this forum thread going. I love talking about yurts & I love designing and building them even more!
Cheers to all of my new friends here on the forum & know I am glad to join the ranks. Let's keep on yurting in the free world!

Steve, thanks for joining! I guess you can't learn too much about yurts and still never hear of Bill Coperthwaite. I am not sure I have any questions for Bill right yet other than: Have you seen the forum?

You will have to let me know when you are back in Taberg, I would love to stop by and see more of your shop and maybe post a few more pics and add more information about

Surely Yurts

.

Have fun on your trip!
