30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

Here's the bending form, to bend the steam-heated 2x4 wood, to form part of the 2.5m skylight ring (8ft). The ring will be made of 4 rings of 2x4, laminated and screwed, to finally make a finished ring 4" thick, and 8" wide. Maybe I'll need to add an extra 5th ring if it's not stiff enough...

30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

I'm building a 30ft (9.15m) yurt for use as a workshop. This will be the third yurt I've built, and I'm kind of just winging it on this one, no plans... just taking what worked on the previous yurts, and using general tried and trusted yurt design elements. I'll post photos as I go. Today the...

4"x1" khana laths, so what intersection spacing would be ok?

I found a good deal on 4"x1" timber (100mm x 25mm), and I'm looking for opinions on how far apart you'd space the khana laths, with such large and strong lengths of timber making up the khana. I think at least 26" (65cm) would be fine... maybe even as much as 80cm. Or heck, why not 40" (100cm)...

What maximum diameter for skylight / tono?

How big can I make my skylight hole / tono? I reckon I could go as wide as 6ft (about 2 meters), if not more. 3m would make it look stupid maybe. I guess the only thing that limits the diameter of the skylight hole would be the rigidity of the tono ring? Just build it stiff enough so it...

Lightning rod for a yurt in an open field?

Last night there was an electrical storm just a few kilometers from my yurt. And now my mother (who lives in a house in the city) is scared I'm going to be killed by lightning. She's desperate for me to put a lightning rod on the top of my chimney, and earth the firebox. Do you think it's a good...

Living amidst chaos, as I rebuild yurt while living in it

Here's my yurt, as I replace all the khana ties with steel bolts, put in a wood floor, a new skylight dome, and a fireplace. All that while living in it. Total chaos! It's slightly hilarious, and I thought I'd show you all just because it's a lesson in what NOT to do. Today, this afternoon it's...

Fire safety, what do you use?

What equipment do you have for fire safety? It's coming up to winter here in the South Island of New Zealand. I've just installed a log fire. The chimney has a spark-guard on it, and there's 6 feet of chimney above the skylight hole, but I'm still worried about the roof catching on fire. It's...
