Re: Hello All. New person here with a good question or two.

I bought my yurt used, so any initial off-gassing had aired out. But I would be surprised if there wasn’t - with all that vinyl. I never notice any plastic smell now even if it’s closed up for...

Re: confused, do most ppl just forego insurance?

Thanks Bob! Good info. Plan for the worst, hope for the best!

Any thoughts on chocking the rafters. (If that’s the correct word. Putting small, perpendicular pieces of wood between the...

Re: confused, do most ppl just forego insurance?

All great information! Glad you weathered the storm, Bob. Whew!

Pacific Yurts - or anyone else. If you don’t mind me asking. What does a “well anchored” platform look like? Cement tubes...

Re: How's Your Yurt Handling The Cold?

That’s crazy! (Crazy good!). Congratulations. I do think the traditional yurts with lower ceilings and fewer (no?) windows are much easier to heat. It’s “only” 3 degrees F here in NH and my 24’...

Re: Heating

Liked the greenhouse yurt idea! Laughed at the burning money comment. 🤭

Comfortably heating a structure in Maine full time (I live in NH) is going to cost you. Esp a standalone. Esp a yurt. ...

Re: Roof (and dome) vs. wind...the wind keeps winning!

Wow. That REALLY sucks. You havenít heard about this because it is not typical.

Iím sure it can be fixed - just what is the best, easiest, fastest, cheapest way to do it. I hope Rainer can...

Cleaning a Yurt Roof?

Yesterday I washed my yurt with water and a bit of dish soap - prior to a nice rain (final rinse) and before the hordes of spring bugs arrive. It was very easy and looks fantastic! But higher up on...

Re: Platform ideas?

I have no idea how well this sort of base would work, but I personally would plan to include multiple tie-down straps over the yurt. And what would keep the straw from decomposing? I know one can...

Re: Looking for both a materials list for deck and yurt itself. anyone have one?

Yes! I agree. It seems there is no shortage of friends, family, and even strangers ready to tell you something "can't be done" the minute you step outside the status quo. If we wanted the status...

Re: Looking for both a materials list for deck and yurt itself. anyone have one?

Hi Richard. My guess is no one here has the sort of list(s) and information you are hoping to find. Most folks bought their yurts from one of the commercial companies. They've never had to source...

Re: Keeping warm in a harsh, snowy winter

Hi Crasmussen. I'm not sure if blue foam (or any other foam) on the walls, would be a good idea - and/or even more importantly - work. Maybe! Personally I use the blue foam for insulating *me*...

Re: Insulation questions...Permanent yurt in Burleson County Texas...

For about $20 I made screen inserts for both my doors. Just 1x2's wood frames (w/a center T for stability) and a roll of screening stapled on - all bought at Home Depot. I began mostly to add a cat...

re: Best Yurt Manufacturer for harsh Maine Winters

I think Jafo is right. Most of the major brands are top notch. Esp if they have been around for a while.

Not sure where you folks are now, but I live in mid-nh, on the eastern side. This is...

Re: Seeking yurt winterization advice

Congratulations on your new place! Fun.

Insulated boxes for water pipes are great, but with a yurt, even once the pipes are inside they aren't safe from extreme temperatures. Adding heat tape...

Re: question regarding Assessed value of Yurt

200 yard walk up. I think Ivan's yurt is 24'? So more like $10,700. I think my NH 24', 7(?) year old White Mt. Yurt with no running water and solar is assessed at $12,900. And honestly, I'm just...

Re: Insulation questions...Permanent yurt in Burleson County Texas...

Invest in some hot water bottles. [email protected] Awesome for heating the bed on cold nights. Or putting on your lap while sitting still - reading or online or whatever. Excellent addition to any...

Re: Wood Stove Recommendation

Dry wood REALLY makes a difference. A huge, huge difference. Unseasoned wood will sometimes burn pretty well, so you think you are okay. But much of the actual heat is going to drying the wood. ...

Re: Wood Stove Recommendation

Mixing some less seasoned wood in with the dry stuff and saving that big oak or beech log for the last nighttime loading helps for a longer burn. I generally don't get up to reload preferring an...

Re: Wood Stove Recommendation

If most of the time you need to heat your yurt up from freezing to nice (ie arriving on a wintery Friday night for the weekend - or even gone all day at work), an oversized stove is probably helpful....

Re: Keeping warm in a harsh, snowy winter

I think the most important things are low expectations and gratitude. Gratitude you are out of the wind and snow, gratitude for the hot drink, warm blanket, woodstove. Yurts do get toasty and you...

Re: How long in a yurt

I am going on year five (full time) in my 24' yurt - and still love it. But I think maybe people end up building a cabin because it's cheaper and easier to regulate temperature and humidity in a...

Nice! Stea, what are the (sandy?) grooves around the sitting are and one side of the yurt? Just curious. -- Cindy
