I do #3 above. It does in fact eat 1.5" of mid weight fabric. In real heavy canvas with a beginners sewing skills, 2". I could care less though I just want a bombproof seam and full lap fell is it.

I made full lap fell seams. Never having made any other seam type I can't speak to how good they are. Imma guess 60s era Apollo space suits had full lap fell seams. lol

As far as canvas weight goes, pro wall tent companies use 10-12 oz. double fill canvas, so I'd think it would work perfect on any nomadic yurt. My cloth was 17 oz AFTER the water treatment.

There are alternatives to 100% canvas. A 50:50 blend of polyester and cotton is an option. I used cheap canvas painters tarps for the wall of my yurt and they are that blend. Porous as all get out...
