Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

Yup. If I had an Americanized yurt with bath it would be vented, and have a window as well. Kitchen the same.

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

Good thinking Jafo. I agree the wall can't breathe covered with poly. I'd remove the poly and install mesh between the insulation and the cover. The slight air gap created just might allow moisture...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

Thought I'd ask, because I brought your thread up talking with my wife today. Mentioned what we did long ago, the -50 in Jackson etc. She said, "I'll bet that is more HIS idea not hers." Well when we...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

I would absolutely discuss this in person with someone who works for the company that makes the units. I'd ESPECIALLY recommend talking with someone who has an actual unit in their house. And best...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

I just remembered, back in the 1970s I used to live in a 20x20 1 bed 1 bath apt. SMALL! It was two areas divided by one wall, each 10x20. A lr/kitchen and 1 bed/bath. Not unlike a 24' partitioned...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

I have trimmed a few stick framed houses in the winter over the last few decades that were temporarily being heated with portable propane heaters because the permanent heater wasn't fired up yet. The...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

You know in all the Mongolian yurts I've seen in photos and videos I don't recall ever seeing a dome or cap. Their smoke holes/rings are covered with a large cloth flap with four attached ropes that...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

I've noticed Mongolian yurts have walls lower than those here in the U.S. Less height, less volume=easier to heat. I understand it is dry in Mongolia, however just possibly the warmer it is inside...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

Yurts are sensitive to trapped moisture. IMO the cover needs to breathe. If the roof cover is impermeable, then the wall cover should be permeable. Add an operable window?

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

If you lack any real ventilation via operable cap vent and operable windows, alot of moisture from cooking and bathing is indeed trapped in your yurt. You have to get the moisture out somehow....

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

I understand about the heat loss and ice dam problem. My wife and I had that problem in our first little apartment up in Jackson Wyo. The single glazed sliding door in the kitchen would develope a...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

I've done that 'redo the batt' thing at the cramped space out at the soffit/ plate line myself. Itchy job, huh? lol Air flow is a big deal. Anyone that has seen the results of water logged insulation...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

To my way of thinking, utilizing the natural air flow inherrent in a yurt is the best way to get excess moisture out of the yurt. IMO the well designed modern U.S. type residential yurt, with hot...
