Re: Building my first yurt

A drafty yurt with a drafty floor is killer in cold weather. Seal all floor gaps. Better yet insulate the platform. Plan on the wall and roof being insulated

Re: Building my first yurt

A couple of comments about stove placement.

I installed my wood stove in the middle of my 16' yurt with traditional placement in mind. I've found that the side the firebox opens to is the basic...

Re: Building my first yurt

Good job all around Ryan.

A drafty floor is unpleasant. Once the weather warms up for a stretch, caulk the floor gaps. Use clear if you don't plan on finishing the floor with paint or stain....

Re: Building my first yurt

I centered my stove pipe in the roof ring with tie wire. There's no way that pipe will ever shift.

As for the China cap, I got a ~3'x4' sheet of flashing at Home Depot for $5. It's in the...

Re: Building my first yurt

Sorry for being so long winded. Fire safety is a very important issue, for protection of you AND the general public.

I just spent some time online googling several sites for wood stove and stove...

Re: Building my first yurt

Make that, 8" seperation for a rated double wall pipe. 21" is for single wall pipe.

Re: Building my first yurt

The deck is looking great.

I need to keep my wood stove and stove pipe a minimum of 21" away from combustibles, according to the 'distance to combustibles' installation plate riveted to the side...

Re: Building my first yurt

Since this is a 'build yurt' thread, I want to make a side comment. I'm all for folks doing things themselves. I've been like that my entire life. If you are winging a build, constructing your yurt...

Re: Building my first yurt

You need advice from a professional electrician that is familiar with your plan and your site. This is a yurt forum. Screw something up and 'I got my service advice from a yurt forum' is gonna make...

Re: Building my first yurt

A belt sander loaded with 50 grit is the way to go on the edge of the 2x decking. If you don't have one, maybe you have a generous friend? Frankly the edge of my deck I could care less about. Nobody...

Re: Building my first yurt

Good job on the platform frame. Cut those 2x deck boards. If you bog down with a full depth cut, simply reset the blade depth for a scoring pass about a half inch. Then make another pass over the...

Re: Building my first yurt

Ryan, I knew zilch about my used wood stove, or the stove pipe necessary for a safe installation, when I set up my stove last summer. I knew the roof ring and cover were combustibles, and the...

Re: Hello

Also, I just reread your platform idea. Sounds good to me. Easy to disassemble in the future. The completed deck is going to be very heavy, and won't shift. Your yurt platform is gonna work fine....

Re: Hello

To check before they go in the wall, gently flex and bend each lattice rip after the holes are drilled. If they don't break, use em. It's all a learning experience. Go for it. You're doing good. Keep...

Re: Hello

My suggestion is to wait to resize the yurt stock. Shoving frozen boards with lumps of ice on them into a table saw is asking to get hurt. Ripping solidly frozen lumber to thin wall lattice size is a...

Re: Hello

When it comes to dwellings, maybe one person in a thousand thinks outside the box of conventional construction. That's understandable and totally OK. It's a testament to just how good we have it here...

Re: Hello

If you happen to opt for 2x6 decking, you might consider adding one or even two additional courses of co blocking for better support. 2' is normally the maximum span for 2x6.

Re: Hello

FYI 2x12s from depot or lowes are gonna shrink big time. How much? Well if you butt them tight at install, six months later you'd be able to stuff a herd of cats into the gaps. :D

I suggest 2x6...
