Its nothing fancy, but Chickens have never complained.

I miss my yurt life!

Its been nearly four years since I moved back to civilization. I still make it out to the yurt often, its our weekend retreat, but I still miss all the challenges that come with living in a yurt full...

Re: How to store water in cold climates

I sleep with my drinking water under the covers with me, about a gallon at a time in two plastic juice bottles (make sure you keep the cap on tight). I fill the pan I use to heat water for coffee...

Re: Almost done!

(Hope the picture that I attached is visible) This picture shows how I managed the interface between the floor and wall (lath not up yet in the picture). The fascia (is there a better term for what...

Re: Time to get off our butts

I opted to go cheap for cordless tools just to get started, I own a Ryobi set and figured I'd be replacing it soon or later. The batteries only made it a year. But, I had a local battery shop re-cell...

Re: Almost done!

I have one layer of reflective bubble wrap and wish I had more. However, my yurt is warm as long as I have a heat source, but as soon as the fire goes out, it is as cold inside as out. I've had many...

Re: Cell Phone Service in Remote Yurts

I use one of the small car units, but, I'm only boosting one or two bars to five. I have noticed that it generates a lot of heat. Have you noticed similar issues?

Re: How's Your Yurt Handling The Cold?

I broke down and installed a wood stove in my 16 foot yurt. I gotta say, early on I had mixed feelings about it. Honestly, in some ways, my kerosene heater (23000 btu) does a better job than the...

Re: Welded steel ring?

I use a welded ring. I had the basic ring fabricated at a local shop and then welded on a few pockets to receive the roof poles. We've had over 200 inches of snow so far this year. No problems at...

Re: How's Your Yurt Handling The Cold?

I use the double sided reflective bubble wrap. I could only swing one layer this year. I plan on adding more insulation this summer.

Re: How's Your Yurt Handling The Cold?

I'm doing well. We had a cold snap with several days bellow 0F and the biggest challenge I faced was keeping my drinking water warm. I heat with kerosene so I have a huge problem with condensation....

Re: Roof "pumps" in the wind. Is that normal? Wood Stove?

I guess I picked a really great time to move into my yurt, high winds and lots of snow from day one (moved in on December 1st). So maybe that has slanted my fear about smoke in the yurt. Last night...

Roof "pumps" in the wind. Is that normal? Wood Stove?

My yurt's roof pumps up and down in the wind and I'm wondering if that is going to create an issue with negative pressure inside, filling the yurt with smoke if I install a wood stove.

Re: Kerosene heater

I have a 16' yurt with a single layer of insulation. A 23,000 btu kerosene heater brings the temp up to a comfortable 65F with outside temps at 10F or colder and high winds. I will not crawl into...

Re: 10' Yurt Questions

I live in a small community. When I was in Highschool woodshop we'd do some custom work for folks, often at the cost of a pizza if they supplied the material. Several 2x4s ripped down will yield all...
