Re: Permitting a yurt

I would say your #1 step, to get the ball rolling, is to go down to the county/city permitting office and talk through your plans with them. And Make sure they understand exactly what/how you plan to...

Yurt construction fun

Here are some photos from our yurt build, beginning last June and running up to this October. It's a 27 foot Colorado Yurt tall boy with a 30' by 32' deck/platform.

Re: Zoning issue!!

What exactly is the zoning violation? Did you call and ask them? Definitely don't ignore them because that's not going to go in your favor in any way.

If I were to guess, you might be...

Re: Heating a yurt

Good to know. I assume a dome lifter would be considered a good vent, when you open it?

Also, for those that use wood stoves, do people generally just let the supply side air "leak" into the yurt...

Re: Floating floor

Good feedback. I'm rethinking my floor based on the feedback from you guys. But trying to find 2x6 T&G seems next to impossible in my area.

Re: Floating floor

That's what I was thinking ...

What do you consider to be a "standard floor"?

Whichever flooring I use it just seems to make more sense to raise the yurt before flooring. The only...

Re: Permitting a yurt

My recent experience in a rural county in Utah. At first we were told by someone in the building department that we didn't need a permit to build a yurt. This was accurate but not the whole story....

Floating floor

We are finally getting to the point of raising our yurt after some permitting struggles. At this point we have a 30' by 32' platform with our 24' round yurt platform built on top of that.

I'm...

Re: battery bank for weekend use yurt in western maine?

Good stuff. So from a system design point of view do you have some sort of disconnect between your panels and charge controller, and you're shutting off charging while you're not there?

Also, do...

Re: battery bank for weekend use yurt in western maine?

This is really good to know. but I'm just noticing that this thread is really really old. Not that the information isn't still reasonably good. It's just that technology for charge controllers and...

Re: battery bank for weekend use yurt in western maine?

I have the same concern, as I'm building now where it can be very cold in winter and very hot in the summer. These kinds of extremes don't seem to play well with batteries. But I'm learning as I go. ...

Re: Radiant heat gain

Sorry I missed some of these comments when they came out. Didn't get notified in my email so thought the thread had died.

In any case, thank you all for taking the time to give me some answers...

Re: Platform framing

Chris,

Yes and yes. We were just trying to sort out how it would work on some of the points at the ends of the center board. But we sorted it out with some perpendicular supports coming off the...

Re: Radiant heat gain

The insulation is going to have to be moved out the way as well. Is that pretty easy to do?
And of course, we need to be thinking about bugs in the summer, so do you screen over that part of the...

Re: Radiant heat gain

Absolutely already thinking about trees. And since we're in the high desert western US the logical choice is cottonwood. Fast growing, somewhat controllable if you stay on top of them at the start...

Re: Radiant heat gain

I'm interested to know more about these fittings. Any chance you could post a link to an example. I'm not even sure what to look for.

We've given serious consideration to the idea of shading the...

Radiant heat gain

My site is in the high desert of the western US, where it gets really warm in the summer. I'm a little worried about radiant heat gain inside the yurt in the summer months.

The dome is smoked...

West and north a ways, Vernal, UT. Thanks for the complement, I appreciate that coming from a skilled tradesman. It's getting close to ready to get that yurt pitched. It's starting to feel real....

Re: Platform framing

A couple photos from this weekends work session. Finished out the OSB underlayment and the 2x4 framing on top, with most of the blocking in place. Any thoughts, comments, recommendations?

Re: Platform framing

Oh, one more detail I forgot to mention. I do plan to angle the ends of the 2x4 framing, to match the curve of the platform as much as possible. This is where I plan to do most of the attachments of...

Re: Platform framing

Thanks for the comments Bob, on the blocking and the spacing/drainage. I plan to gap the deck boards themselves (between each other) and also have a 1/2" or 3/4" gap between the decking and the...

I'm getting ready to do the framing for the circular part of my platform. I have a 30'x32' deck and putting the circular platform on top of the deck. See attached image.

So far all I have is a...

Re: Platform structure question

You're absolutely right. I had it backward in my head (and then on my plan) for some silly reason. Glad you said something. It made me go back to look at the plans from Colorado Yurt and check myself.

I'm...

Re: Loft or partitions in 24 foot yurt

I tend to agree with your comment, and like the idea of putting up some kind of temporary dividers up to try it out.

Has anyone done partitions in a 24 footer and have any feedback?
