Re: New member's yurt plan

Where does the moist vented air go, once it is in the room under the yurt?

Re: 30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

I decided against steam bending the lumber for the ring because it was going to take a looong time to steam each piece. Easier to laminate ply.

Re: 30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

Progress has been slow but steady.
I have bought almost all my materials, and I've cut the lattice laths and roof rafters to the correct length.
Skylight ring pieces have been cut roughly, and I'll...

Re: Roof (and dome) vs. wind...the wind keeps winning!

That's exactly what I did too! Except instead of tying the 12 ropes to bolts, I tied each to a 30 liter water container, for a total of 360kg of holding-down weight. That's ... I don't, 750 pounds?...

Re: Roof (and dome) vs. wind...the wind keeps winning!

Looking more closely at the pictures it seems like the roof cover has been designed very very badly. There's no way to tie it on! Is it still under warranty? Who designed it?
it wouldn't be too much...

Re: Roof (and dome) vs. wind...the wind keeps winning!

Yes, as Jafo said, you need to anchor it somehow. The problem is not that the wind is getting under it and lifting it off, the problem is that the roof of the yurt is acting like a wing surface; fast...

Re: 30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

Thanks very much for the advice Josh, it's really valuable info.
I was going to use epoxy as glue, but will use the brown Gorilla stuff instead.
Boil the wood, i never considered that. . ...

Re: 30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

Very good point Bob. The ends of the pipe are just blocked by rags, with space for the steam to escape at the far end.

Re: 30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

Fail!
Not enough steam was generated by my gas cooker. Half the pipe got to maybe 70degC, but the far end was cool to touch even after an hour. The whole thing needs to be full of boiling steam. ...

Re: 30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

Skylight ring / Tono steaming day!
This basic setup is what I'm experimenting with...
Steel pipe.
Boiler made of old gas bottle cut up.
Rags.
Gas cooker.

Steam for maybe 3 hours, then bend...

Re: 30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

You know you're building a big yurt, when you have to look up Vehicle Load Maximum Dimensions, and size the parts to be just smaller than that. Maximum sideways load for a regular car in NZ is 2.5m.

Re: 30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

Here's the bending form, to bend the steam-heated 2x4 wood, to form part of the 2.5m skylight ring (8ft).
The ring will be made of 4 rings of 2x4, laminated and screwed, to finally make a finished...

Wink 30ft workshop yurt build (9 meters)

I'm building a 30ft (9.15m) yurt for use as a workshop. This will be the third yurt I've built, and I'm kind of just winging it on this one, no plans... just taking what worked on the previous yurts,...

Re: The project rises again..advice, please and thanks?

Yeah your plan sounds workable, although I suspect you might be overthinking things.
Just make sure the tension band or bond beam is appropriate to the roof you're supporting. A straw bale wall...

Re: New member's yurt plan

Regarding your laundry/utility room: There are few things more annoying than a dark room with no windows, which also has an external wall which could have had a window.

Yeah I was going to say I like it too. Much better than some of the eccentric plans some people have posted on this site over the years.
Best wishes

Re: Yurt in Denmark ?

I agree. I live full time in my 6m yurt and I'm glad I didn't build anything bigger.
I am building a 30 foot one, but that's for a workshop.

4"x1" khana laths, so what intersection spacing would be ok?

I found a good deal on 4"x1" timber (100mm x 25mm), and I'm looking for opinions on how far apart you'd space the khana laths, with such large and strong lengths of timber making up the khana.

I...

Yes, electric is definitely easiest. No installation costs, movable, and with a thermostat.

If you want to minimize the heat loss, go for the highest rated insulation package available, the one...

Re: Heating

I'd advise you to get a brazier, and a huge stack of dollar bills, and burn the money to heat your yurt.

You'd better be rich, 'cos heating an outdoor room 24/7/365 is going to cost a fortune no...

Re: What maximum diameter for skylight / tono?

I read that the traditional size of tono is 20% of yurt diameter. If I build a 30ft yurt and have a 9ft tono (3 metres), that's 30% of yurt diameter, which looks okay when I draw a scale plan.
It's...
