I decided against steam bending the lumber for the ring because it was going to take a looong time to steam each piece. Easier to laminate ply.

That's exactly what I did too! Except instead of tying the 12 ropes to bolts, I tied each to a 30 liter water container, for a total of 360kg of holding-down weight. That's ... I don't, 750 pounds?...

Looking more closely at the pictures it seems like the roof cover has been designed very very badly. There's no way to tie it on! Is it still under warranty? Who designed it?

Yes, as Jafo said, you need to anchor it somehow. The problem is not that the wind is getting under it and lifting it off, the problem is that the roof of the yurt is acting like a wing surface; fast...

I was going to use epoxy as glue, but will use the brown Gorilla stuff instead.

Very good point Bob. The ends of the pipe are just blocked by rags, with space for the steam to escape at the far end.

Fail!
Not enough steam was generated by my gas cooker. Half the pipe got to maybe 70degC, but the far end was cool to touch even after an hour. The whole thing needs to be full of boiling steam. ...

Skylight ring / Tono steaming day!
This basic setup is what I'm experimenting with...
Steel pipe.
Boiler made of old gas bottle cut up.
Rags.
Gas cooker.

Steam for maybe 3 hours, then bend...

You know you're building a big yurt, when you have to look up Vehicle Load Maximum Dimensions, and size the parts to be just smaller than that. Maximum sideways load for a regular car in NZ is 2.5m.

Here's the bending form, to bend the steam-heated 2x4 wood, to form part of the 2.5m skylight ring (8ft).
The ring will be made of 4 rings of 2x4, laminated and screwed, to finally make a finished...

Yeah your plan sounds workable, although I suspect you might be overthinking things.
Just make sure the tension band or bond beam is appropriate to the roof you're supporting. A straw bale wall...

Regarding your laundry/utility room: There are few things more annoying than a dark room with no windows, which also has an external wall which could have had a window.

I read that the traditional size of tono is 20% of yurt diameter. If I build a 30ft yurt and have a 9ft tono (3 metres), that's 30% of yurt diameter, which looks okay when I draw a scale plan.
