Re: Split heating ac units

The one issue that we have found is the exterior units coils will freeze up.

You have to understand you are trying to heat and cool a tent.

It would be better if you used the wood stove to do...

Re: Electric sockets in yurts

I ran the wire along the floor and attached the outlet boxes to the floor. I covered the wire with a flexible mesh. The wire is out of the way where it can not be stepped on.

Re: DIY and natural waterproofing for canvas?

You are likely going to have serious mold issues with canvas in Maine. Maine is a very wet state. Chronic mold is far worse for you than a commercially made vinyl cover will ever be. The mold will...

Re: Slabs and radiant heat

ToddL,

Couple of questions: What region do you live in, ie; what kind of weather do you experience?

Are you off grid?

Are you planning on living in the yurt full time?

Are you going to...

Re: Plumbing vent

That is going to depend on your location.

You will probably have to contact your local inspector and get his/her take on this. As an FYI, most who have a yurt, especially if they live in it, have...

Re: My quick intro

I am always amazed at peoples abilities. I am handy but I would not attempt to build my own yurt. The fact that you, Krusty, built your own log/timber frame home with had tools, you will not have a...

Re: Spiritual evolution in the yurt

Even though our Yurt is in a small town in Idaho one of the really cool things is we can hear the trains that are going through the town.

Yurts are unique and special living domiciles.

Re: Split heating ac units

I made a bench with a framed up back the height of the GER wall. Think of a large chair with a high wooden back. I made it big enough that it is stable with the interior portion of the split unit...

Re: Do portable air conditioners work in yurts?

I can not remember the BTU’s. I think it was 18,000. The brand was Blueridge and I bought it online from Alpine Home Air Products.

The have a complete DYI system that that is very easy to set up....

Wires from solar panel to charge controller. Charge controller to batteries. Batteries to inverter. Inverter to appliance(s).

I run my batteries in series also.

Re: Rigid foam insulation against lathe / canvas

What you haven’t discussed is what will be in the inside, bathroom, kitchen ect. That is where the vast majority of potential moisture will come from.

Is the cover already up and I am assuming...

Re: Getting Creative with Drip Edge Material

We didn't use any on our Traditional Ger. We placed the lattice work around the edge, covered everything with Tyvek and stapled the Tyvek to the platform (our platform is raised above the level of...

Re: Yurt Experience on the Wet, West Coast

Peppermint oil is supposed to work well to keep mice out. As far as moisture if you are not in it using items that cause moisture and you winterize it I don't think that would be too much of an issue...

Re: Do portable air conditioners work in yurts?

I have a mini-split in my Mongolian Yurt in northern Idaho and we use it a fair amount in the summer and it works well. I can not remember the BTU's but I remember getting slightly oversized so it...

Re: Renting Yurts in New England winters?

Separate small building with the bathroom and kitchen. Not sure if that is possible for you. That is what we did, Groovy Yurt and Tiny House.

I have a Mongolian Yurt that I put the vent through the wall using triple insulated pipe with a through the wall vent kit and it works great.

Re: Platform framing

Insulation (styrofoam) between the 2x4's?

Can't you just attach 1/4 plywood parimeter to the 2x4's with some longer screws?

Re: Pacific Yurt platform recommendation

With it being a bunk house I do not see any need to go closer than 4 feet with 2x6 flooring.

Another way is get engineered floor joist. That is what my yurt sits on with 3/4 subfloor.

I agree...

Re: Radiant heat gain

If you are serious about getting it cool, invest in a split unit and a larger generator. You can get generators now that run off propane and are remote start.

Do you plan on staying in it for...

Re: Heating a yurt

A non-vented propane heater will cause significant moisture, especially as the temperature drops.

I know of no way to regulate temp without a thermostat and none would meet your criteria.
