Re: Off-Grid Solar for Full-Time Residency

Hello again! We're still looking at off-grid solar. I have run the numbers once again, very lean:

* vent fan for composting toilet
* one laptop PC
* two cellphone chargers
* pipe heater to...

Re: Tankless water heater recommendations

Since my water supply is a well, I have a 220v pump (powered by a generator) feeding a pressure tank, so I don't need the 12v pump. I will keep the pump in mind if I get set up for rainwater...

Tankless water heater recommendations

I'm looking for a small tankless water heater for use in my yurt. Since I will be off-grid at least for the near future, it must be propane-powered with no AC power requirement.
This one ...

Re: Equipment Needed to Erect a 24' Yurt

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone. I think the ramp approach will help immensely. I had that idea originally, but didn't think of backing it with an extension ladder.

It still sounds like...

Re: Equipment Needed to Erect a 24' Yurt

Checking back. Using a tall stepladder and a 11' scaffold, we had very little trouble installing the center ring.

Unfortunately, we didn't have the same luck installing the cover. It must weigh...

Re: Equipment Needed to Erect a 24' Yurt

I have already contacted Nomad with my questions and am waiting for their yurt builder to get back to me. I was just hedging my bets by posting here as well.
Thanks

Equipment Needed to Erect a 24' Yurt

We expect to receive our yurts (16' and 24') from Nomad next week, and I'm wondering what we need to have on hand. Specifically, what size scaffold is needed to assemble a 24' yurt? Are any other...

Re: Flooring Options

My main problem with installing the finish flooring before raising the yurt is that the floor could be exposed to the elements for days or even weeks. Tarps are expensive and hard to secure in a way...

Re: Flooring Options

The yurt platforms (one 16' and one 24') will be the same dimensions as the yurts that will sit atop them, so I guess we're good with installing the flooring after. Thanks.

Re: Flooring Options

Now I'm even more confused. If you erect a yurt without first installing the subfloor, what are you putting it on? The ground?

To be clear, I should be okay with putting the yurt directly on...

Re: Flooring Options

By 'subfloor', do you mean the platform? It's 3/4" plywood.

Thanks.

Flooring Options

I'm trying to figure out what kind of floor to put in my yurts. According to the pinned thread on yurt building, it's not possible to install a floor after the yurt is in place, but if I install the...

Re: Nomad Shelter Yurts

I'm glad to read these positive reviews of Nomad yurts as they are currently building me two yurts: a 24' and a 16' that will be connected. Can't wait!

Re: Off-Grid Solar for Full-Time Residency

I'm actually doing this project with two other people. I discussed your reservations and recommendations with them, but they are still sold on the idea of being off-grid, so I'm outvoted.

Wish...

Re: Off-Grid Solar for Full-Time Residency

The soil is clay in most places. Where it isn't clay, there's shale just under the topsoil. Not great for hand digging, but if I can find a good spot for it I'm not averse to renting an excavator. ...

Re: Off-Grid Solar for Full-Time Residency

I had already shaved a lot when I filled out that spreadsheet-- propane water heating and cooking, propane fridge, no TV, etc. I specified one 60W bulb for lighting, thinking that 6-8 LED lights...

Re: Off-Grid Solar for Full-Time Residency

I actually do have a well. Its pump is powered by a 240v gasoline generator. I have thought about the cistern approach -- I'm guessing it would need to be insulated, as I'm in central Ohio.

Re: Off-Grid Solar for Full-Time Residency

I filled out an "off-grid daily load worksheet" that I found on an solar power website, and came up with about 4300 daily AC power watts. The two biggest contributors to that total are the water...

Re: Off-Grid Solar for Full-Time Residency

I spoke to a guy from our electric co-op and found out why they won't put up a pole for a residence unless you have water & septic but they will do it for a business: businesses must pay 100% of the...

Off-Grid Solar for Full-Time Residency

Hello everyone. I'm putting up a pair of yurts that I will [eventually] use for my permanent residence. I am close enough to town that I can connect to the grid, but the power company won't hook me...
