Re: Traditional vs modern?

From the sounds of it, you're probably in the southern half of western Oregon?

Probably not much snow to worry about, but on the sunny side. Within a few years sun will kill the simple canvas...

Re: Organization/Storage Ideas

With the three ropes around the belly and a cinch strap around the base, the walls don't really vibrate in wind. Sometimes the urgh/ring cover will jump up to alleviate pressure differences or some...

Re: Organization/Storage Ideas

Oh, I also have a 6 ft sapling staff that I put through the crown ring support posts (not usually present in modern-style yurts). I use it for drying towels or laundry on clothes hangars and such.

Re: Organization/Storage Ideas

A tall bed, like 3+ ft, is really useful. Dressers & storage boxes, even a dog kennel/crate can go under it. I've 6 ft walls, and there's plenty of head space, only slightly cramped near the wall...

Re: Looking for feedback on my floor plan

Wikipedia is always a favorite first recourse for learning more. Be sure to peruse the absorption page as well and maybe check out the commercial offering (likely very expensive & overkill)....

Re: Looking for feedback on my floor plan

For quick growing shade trees, Silver or Red Maples could be a good short to mid-term fit, maybe longer too. Various poplar hybrids would probably be the best though, at least quick height &...

Re: Looking for feedback on my floor plan

A yurt in Portugal sounds nice! Hopefully you have some shady outdoor/water areas to go during the heat of the day. With the lightweight structure that they are, yurts cool down quickly in the...

Re: Masonry Heater for my Yurt

Still around--just trying to not poke my finger in too many pies :P

I moved in the middle of January and am storing the yurt until I find another place to set up. I paid a fellow with a 20 ft...

re: Cows and yurts

I was going to setup my yurt in a cow pasture, but I got a job elsewhere before that became a reality. I wouldn't expect the cows to munch on the materials too much, but they could easily decide it's...

Re: Do I really need a platform?

Welcome to the forums!

I would suggest calling Rainier Yurts with your question. From my limited knowledge of modern yurts they generally require a platform to fix their rafter support posts in...

Re: Flooring options for transportable yurt?

Check out some of my photos/albums. I just took up my yurt to move to a new town for a job--don't have a place to setup yet but hopefully can find something by the not-so-rainy months here.

Re: Solar question-help needed

The more current you draw, the hotter the converter will get--basically all the excess power gets converted to heat. Ie, (12 V-5 V)* amps = watts heating. Milliamp draws aren't going to heat things...

Re: Privacy in loft rooms

I've somewhat heard of sound-dampening curtains, and they might be effective in limited ways. But they'd probably have to be very dense & heavy.

If you have a theatre/cinema nearby, you might be...

Re: Solar question-help needed

One thing to double check--look at the booster power supply and verify that it's outputting just 5 V 1 amp. In some images of your booster there's a '12 V' symbol on there along with the '5 V'--could...

Re: Solar question-help needed

Now you're thinking! Inverters have that standby current draw, so using that voltage regulator (buck converter) for your 5 V electronics is an excellent idea since you'd just be rectifying the AC...

Re: Solar question-help needed

Interesting idea/setup. If you could post a link to your 12v timer spec's I might be able to comment more.

Also, what inverter are you using? Do they give a standby current usage or just the peak...

Impressive! From what I know of Texas weather patterns, a yurt is an interesting choice. I've been told it can be 70 F one day, 30 F the next during the cool season...

I would suggest a...

Re: Installation of Trekker Diesel Stove into Surely Yurts Yurt

Neat! Looks like the trekker maxes out at 12k btu though, so not much compared to your wood stove. Their larger models go up to 50/60k btu however--they also rate them for _volume_ heated instead of...

Re: Equipment Needed to Erect a 24' Yurt

My 20 ft yurt has a single piece canvas that weighs about 110 lbs. I marked the center of the part that goes around the crown ring so I can tie a rope there & hoist it up. I start outside the door,...
