Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

BTW, any of you guys on FB? I've long avoided to join, but I had to (to sell my products) and I'll be glad to meet you there.

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

hey Bob! Glad to be back, even though not being a fulltime yurt resident anymore.
As for dampness, I don't really think I have that much to say, other that "this didn't work" on some possible...

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

Thanks! I was quite sad to leave my yurt and hope to spend future weekends and holidays there...but as I said, it was necessary to get our own place finally.
I would still love to make stuff for...

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

Hey everyone, I was away for quite a while. Lived in the yurt for most of the time, but by the end of 2018, me and my wife got our own house and moved. I needed mkore place for my workshops and she...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

Yes, we have electric power. The fan might be a way to go, though I think there's some larger caliber solution needed. I was thinking about making several air-pipes of some sorts, that would go...

Re: Moisture in the Yurt from Condensation

Well looks like I've just joined the condensation club. For a long time there was no problem, but as temperatures are dropping lately and we have the woodstove lit most of the day, I've just found...

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

To be honest, I didn't ask. The land belongs to my family and technically it's a tent. I've never heard of anybody asking for permission to build a tent on his own property. Also, we have a regular...

Re: woodstove in yurt

We have a vintage cast iron stove in our yurt and so far we've been happy with it. This winter will show us if it's really enough.

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

I found out my stove is great if you like roasted sausage for supper.
Which I do! The large door is just above the fire grid, makes roasting easy.

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

Nice. Putting a pipe through wall makes some things much easier, though it requires well prepared wall section for that.

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

Interesting, thanks. I think I've heard about the Innuits linig their firepits with it. I have rather small pieces, that I use for carving various historical stuff. Not sure if I could find any large...

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

The device behind the stove is a spark trap. The whole set is army surplus, likely made in 50's or so. It was made for large army tents and various semi-permanent installations. Very primitive...

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

It's getting cold here lately, had to fire up the stove today, after a long time. Still works fine. Already learned to heat the pipe first with a torch of rolled newspaper, to get a nice draft. Works...

Re: Building a Yurt

Smart! A little complicated, but smart and surely gets the job done. I used just plain old chisel and mallet, I seem to work faster and more accurate with handtools than I can with powertools

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

Thanks for the ideas. I don't plan to redo the stairs any soon unless necessary. At first I wanted to make cutouts in the sides for each step, but went the lazy way. Must focus on making stuff for...

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

Some of the planks don't fit all that well between the side boards. No matter how precisely I've tried to have everything measured and straight and accurate, it's not. However, it works fine, so I'm...

I don't have much experience bending and laminating wood, but guess it might work.

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

Almost done! One narrow upper plank will be added yet, that will be in line with the porch floor.
Then just need to add some banister to one side and our stairs are complete.

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

Thanks, it's not really an issue anymore, as the yurt is already standing and we live in it.
I've also seen some Mongolian khana meanwhile, made of natural sticks, just flattened on two sides. If I...

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

Once it's complete, I'll pour some concrete into the ground blocks.

Re: Planning to build a yurt in Czech Republic

Should receive some more furniture in the next week, so we can unpack into it and get rid of the banana box pile.
Making a coat hanger, using bronze cast direct replicas of certain Roman artifact....
