Re: Insulating a yurt roof

So I consistently see people putting bubble-wrap style radiant barrier insulation in between a decorative inner layer and the outside canvas. Everything I've read says that radiant barrier doesn't...

Re: Platform posts options for moist clay soil

...and no, the Soul Pad bell tent in the background is *not* my yurt. This is the yurt frame on the platform:

Also, naturally, my...

Re: Platform posts options for moist clay soil

For my admittedly small 12" yurt platform, I used RV levelers on top of concrete blocks. I used 16 of them in this pattern. My site in on an incline, with a 12" drop from front to back, so I raised...

Re: A hole in the Roof

In the Burning Man community we make a lot of roofs out of recycled billboard vinyl. It only lasts a few years (at least in Texas) but it's cheap and widely available. The thing we often use to glue...

Re: Do portable air conditioners work in yurts?

Thanks Bob! That means a lot coming from you. I also considered using Tyvek to put the batts in, since there would be less likely to be moisture problems, but it's way more expensive. My Mom had the...

Re: Do portable air conditioners work in yurts?

I live in Texas outside Austin where we get up into the 100s, and sometimes have humidity in the 65% range at the same time. I've used both a single-hose and double-hose portable systems, both about...

Re: Rain cover with ventilation for tono in Mongolian Ger?

Are you talking about an iron for ironing clothes? The computer heat sink I understand.

Re: Rain cover with ventilation for tono in Mongolian Ger?

James,

So it sounds like you're running the incoming cold air through your computer's heat sink? Wild! I'd be worried about condensation getting on the motherboard.

I was just trying to...

I *think* this is what James is talking about? In the winter you bring your fresh air into the yurt...

Re: Flooring Options

I did use tongue-and-groove. Any board type flooring makes cutting the edges painful. It helps to cut out a piece of wood or plastic the same curvature as the outer wall. Then you can use a sharpie...

Re: Flooring Options

Hi Mary,

I got mine at Lumber Liquidators. Because my square footage was so small it was easy to get some leftovers on clearance. Overall I've been very happy with it. The one problem is that it...

Re: Insulated floor- (foam board sandwich?)

I have a small 12" yurt I've lived in full time for five years in Texas and that's how I did mine. I used 2 layers of OSB with foam sandwiched between them. I don't think I glued anything because I...

Re: Billboard or other Vinyl roof cover

I've lived in a 12' homebuilt yurt covered with recycled billboard vinyl for about 5 years. I vaguely recall a little of that smell initially, but one advantage of recycled is that it's sat outside...

Re: Assembling yurt alone...

I second the "build a hoist" idea. I originally had a fancy Voltron-style tripod thing that I assembled out of six of my roof rafters. It had a pulley on top to fine tune the roof height.

You can...

Re: A yurt in northeast Texas

The first and second scorpions appeared on the first and second dates with a new woman on the ceiling over the bed. :)

I've now used a Honeywell and Haier rolling portable AC unit in the summers....

Re: A yurt in northeast Texas

I don't really have much problem with pests. Mosquitos are the most annoying, because they will find any tiny hole to get in through, and will infest any accessible water. I have one of those...

Re: use rivet to joint the lattice wall together

My RV is a custom stealth short-wheelbase high-top Sprinter that I'm working on myself. While I don't currently have plans to live in it full time (I have a yurt for that!) that's the design spec....

Re: use rivet to joint the lattice wall together

Wow, it's surprising that they don't use something more strong! It would seem to depend a lot on wind, snow load, people crawling on top, etc.

The lathe cross at the top is also where mine rests....

Bob,

Thanks for all the info. I really appreciate field reports from people who've tried a lot of things. Are you talking about the tension ring at the top, or another belly band in the middle of...

Re: use rivet to joint the lattice wall together

I used Chicago Bolts for my 16/12" yurt, and they've worked well in the field for several years. They're sized for 3x the width of the khana ribs, so there's an extra rib of slop. Note that my khana...

Re: Flooring options for transportable yurt?

Hi! I'm in Austin. I don't move my yurt very often, but I wanted to create a platform that could be moved by an average sized sedan if necessary. I didn't completely achieve that, but I got close.

Re: MOLD and Offgassing!

I live in a small 12-ft yurt in Austin where humidity can be a problem, especially in the summer. Other people with more cold weather experience should chime in. There are several things that help....

Re: Solar question-help needed

Also, adding a second cheap panel that's mostly compatible is probably easier and cheaper than all the timers, etc. Or trading the one you have and a little cash for two that are compatible and can...

Re: Solar question-help needed

I second the idea of using DC->DC converters instead of 120V if you really don't need it. They make them for various laptops, along with the stuff already show here.

However, it's also worth just...

Re: Flooring Options

I installed my cork flooring after the yurt was up. It simply stops short of the wall lattice, leaving a small gap. Since my 12' yurt is pretty full, I don't see the gap. Overall the cork has been...
