Re: Yurts and energy consumption (Firewood)

This is a brilliant observation. Comparing it to fasting is probably appropriate. I see a lot of people going from a room-temp house to a pre-warmed room temp car, rushing into their room temp office...

Re: Yurts and energy consumption (Firewood)

I'm in Northern Ontario and have lived in a 22ft Groovy Yurt for 6 years. We average 4.5-5 bush cords per winter. 70% of that is spruce, 20% poplar and 10% birch. There is a very noticeable...

Re: Realistically how long can I live in a yurt?

We've been living full time in our 6wall/22ft Groovy Yurt for 5 years. We're in a much colder climate than you're considering and we have just two layers of felt. I really don't think you'll need...

Re: How's Your Yurt Handling The Cold?

We're in a 22ft Groovy Yurt with double felt and an 8inch Styrofoam floor directly on the ground. -42C/-44F this morning and still 24-26C inside.

Re: How's Your Yurt Handling The Cold?

We're in the middle of our 4th winter in our Groovy Yurt and we can't imagine ever living in a "normal" house ever again. We consistently go through about 4.5 bush cords of firewood per year--90% of...

Re: Beginner considering Yurt living

Yes, we did. We have two layers (1") of felt, house wrap, then untreated canvas. I don't think the vapour is getting to the house wrap before condensing and freezing. I actually wonder if we'd have...

Re: Beginner considering Yurt living

When we researched yurt living and the challenges involved, the biggest thing that seemed to come up was the problem of condensation. There were lots of stories of indoor glaciers forming and causing...

Re: How's Your Yurt Handling The Cold?

We went with a double layer of felt that adds up to about one inch total thickness. We are roasty-toasty cozy even down to -35c but at warmer temps (anything warmer than -10c) we have to ventilate....

Re: How's Your Yurt Handling The Cold?

I forgot to mention the all important data- we are calculating that our firewood consumption by season's end will be in the range of 4-5 bush cords. Much less than feared.

Re: How's Your Yurt Handling The Cold?

This is our first winter in our 22ft Groovy Yurt and so far it's been fantastic. We've had some issues with moisture but seem to have fixed that by pre-drying all of our firewood in our sauna. We're...

Re: Yurt flooring

We put 8" panels of expanded polystyrene insulation (SIP panels) down on a raised bed of gravel and then screwed plywood on top (the SIP panels have metal studs embedded every 24"). This seemed the...

Re: Rocket Mass Heater in a yurt

I'm sure that the dog's diet will have some bearing on the DTU content. Luckily for me, my two retrievers have a fondness for gnawing on branches and logs, as well as eating dried leaves and weeds....

Re: Rocket Mass Heater in a yurt

I have Becky Kemery's book and all I found in there was reference to "sometimes several layers" of felt. No mention of thickness or number of layers.

I do believe that my insulated chimney,...

[QUOTE=hierony;5409] (except when the mongolians use 5 layers of 1" thick felt during winter...). QUOTE]

Can you elaborate on where you heard how much felt the Mongolians use? We've got two 1/2"...

Re: yurt in a greenhouse?

Thanks, Yves.

Connecting the yurt and greenhouse may be a challenge with frost heaving, so I think I'd prefer the brief exposure to the elements between structures.

Rather than connecting...

Re: yurt in a greenhouse?

Yeah, the humidity would be the main concern. The summer heat can be alleviated by shade cloth, venting, etc but it may still be too warm. Our winter's here are quite dry and I'm not sure how humid...

yurt in a greenhouse?

We're awaiting delivery of a Groovyyurt and anticipating an adventurous winter of living in it in northern Ontario. We're also trying to establish various types of gardens and plan to build a...

Re: Choosing Floor Insulation

Jay, what size and make of yurt do you have and what sort of wall and/or ceiling insulation?

Re: Choosing Floor Insulation

Yes, we get frost heaving and our frost depth is probably about 8ft or more. The charts for frost depth I've seen seem pretty broad-brush in nature.

Our "topography" over short distances has a...

Re: Choosing Floor Insulation

I'd think tyvek or similar would be better in that it allows the bales to breath.

Re: Choosing Floor Insulation

Thanks Hierony for your responses. Unfortunately for me, a bale costs about $6 CDN, but that is still within reason for the R-value, simplicity and non-toxicity value. Also, if the straw spoils it is...

Re: Choosing Floor Insulation

I'm interested in your strawbale thoughts. I'm guessing from your picture that you are using this for your floor? Did you lay your bales right on the ground or build it up somehow? Did you use any...

Re: What does the drip edge do?

Buishi, do you mind telling us where you're located? You mentioned winter temps of -40 and I'm wondering how comparable your climate is to mine in Northern Ontario. Also, what type of yurt do you...

Re: yurt vs house

10?! In Pennsylvania?! Good god, I can't imagine what that would translate to in my climate.
