Many years ago I worked for a furniture company called This End Up. Later they went out of business but a few years ago, someone brought it back. Anyway, the furniture is made out of solid Southern Yellow Pine. Our policy then was to instruct our customers to use linseed oil. It protects the wood, but still allows it to breath, unlike say a poly. After a few layers, it really does make the wood shine.

Re: Waterproofing Mongolian Yurt Lattice?
I'm so sorry I missed your responses for so long. I happen to have a lot of boiled linseed oil on hand, too. I used it to water seal my deck this summer.

Now that the rains are here and water is leaking in at the bottom of the yurt (another problem to solve) I am going to use the next dry day to hike up the covers and apply linseed oil to the bottom "rung" of the lattice at least.

Thanks for the suggestion!
