acrylic dome

can someone please tell me the diameter of the acrylic dome on a pacific yurt? I cant seem to find it on their website or brochure, thanks!

Jafo 12-03-2012 03:43 PM

I moved this to the "Building a Yurt" forum. You should know that Pacific Yurts is having a parts sale and I believe it is until the end of December. You might want to contact them directly on their website, or you can contact their rep here.

I would caution that they will probably respond faster from their site than here because they are just like any other users here, they come and go as they want to. :)

Good luck in your hunt!

thanks, I was trying to move it after I realized it was in the wrong forum but couldnt figure out how to do it! My problem is that Im not sure I have a pacific yurt and they wont sell me a dome if its not, and I know the rainier dome and the colorado domes are too large, Im trying to be stealthy

Jafo 12-03-2012 03:59 PM

Well, can you post some pictures of the parts? We should be able to tell you if we see the both ends of the rafters and the center ring.

heres a picture of it

norcal 12-03-2012 04:07 PM

well right now its eight hrs away and the folks living in it have a tarp over the top, Ill dig through my pictures and see what Ive got

Jafo 12-03-2012 04:07 PM

Well I can tell you that I doubt it is a PY yurt, because they explicitly state to not put the chimney through the roof or it will void the warranty of it.

I believe Colorado yurts will sell you any part you wish, regardless of what you have. Hope that helps!

I know the wood part at the top of the yurt that the dome attaches to is two octagons or dodecagons offset, attached together. The opening in the wood is roughly 34 inches wide. The acrylic dome attaches with two or three metal springs and a cotter pin attached to a small metal box that operates a crank arm that raises and lowers the dome. I think the dome is about 40-48 inches wide. It blew off in the storm yesterday and the folks living in it say they have not found all of the pieces. There is not a name visible anywhere on the yurt.

the colorado yurts dome is way to large, its 5 feet wide ):

norcal 12-03-2012 06:23 PM

thanks for trying to help

norcal 12-03-2012 06:31 PM

I emailed them and they said that they couldnt tell me the diameter, because its proprietary information...... TOP SECRET!!!

Jafo 12-03-2012 08:20 PM

Do the original owners know where they purchased the yurt?

norcal 12-04-2012 02:14 PM

sadly, I dont know who the original owners are

Pacific Yurts 12-04-2012 05:39 PM

Based on the photo you posted I can say that it is not a Pacific Yurt. It appears that it could be a Laurel Nest Yurt. I would suggest contacting them through their web site Laurel Nest Yurts. Otherwise you might try contacting AIA Industries (Skylights from AIA Skylights - Velux, Replacement, Custom Skylights) to see if one of their stock sizes of dome skylights will work for you.

norcal 12-04-2012 06:21 PM

thanks for the tip, I just called and emailed them a few hours ago. If I order from AIA how much overlap do you think I need, the opening in the wood framing is 34 inches from one flat side of the octagonal wood frame to the opposite flat side?

Pacific Yurts 12-04-2012 06:24 PM

The outer edge of the skylight should extend beyond the outermost circumference of the center ring. Ideally the outer flange would then turn downward. You should measure the center ring at its widest point.

I don't recognize that yurt from any manufacturer, but it looks decently made... The dome size is an immediate give away that it isn't one of the leaders in the industry. There's are all about 5' in diameter. Good guess on Laurel Nest. Hal and Asia will be willing to help you find an adequate dome even if it isn't one of theirs.

Thanks for the help, I just purchased a dome from yurts of america, Jerry was really helpful, and had one in stock that he shipped out today, Thanks again

HawaiiYurts 12-11-2012 09:42 PM

Let us know how that turns out, would you? I haven't worked with Yurts of America/Great American/Yurts-r-us in many years but would love to hear if they get you a satisfactory product in a reasonable amount of time. I know they have put in a lot of work to turn things around there over the years.

Re: acrylic dome

I am planning to order a dome asap for our yurt project.

At the AIA order form you customize all dimensions & I am wondering how tall of a dome do people generally have and like?

I am thinking 10" high but would love any input.

Thanks!
