Canvas and materials
Hi. I’m building my first yurt. It’ll be 14 feet. I’m curious If anyone has a good reliable company where To purchase treated canvas. Which weight is Most appropriate. It is such a huge expense!
And also curious if any companies sell the plastic bubbles for the centre ring. I could easily include a soft vinyl, but the hard plastic rings have a nice look. Does anyone have any experience make inner wall isolation from raw sheep wool? We live in farming area, so access to sheep wool. |
Re: Canvas and materials
We have a new sponsor here, Beowulf, that might be able to help (see ad on side):
https://beowulf-nc.com/ I am not sure about the domes though. |
Re: Canvas and materials
I can sell you 10.10oz Sunforger marine Canvas. It’s $7.50 a yard plus shipping.
We also sell the ring domes. They are designed to fit our rings which are 24”, 30” 36” and 48”. We make and sell yurts for camping. If your yurt us for permanent set up, I would suggest putting a vinyl cover over the top. We offer simple 22oz vinyl covers too, but have them manufactured for us. Check out our website and if you need more info, just call me. 54I-41O-I63O |
Re: Canvas and materials
offgridyurt...I had a 100% canvas cover on my yurt, set up year around, here in semi arid CO. It was 17 oz treated canvas, quality material. Regardless, it was completely shot in five years. I don't mean kinda raggedy, I mean useless as a cover.
If you are going to live in your yurt long term over several years, I strongly suggest you get a vinyl cover as yurtman suggests. |
Re: Canvas and materials

Re: Canvas and materials
Billboard vinyl is a really cheap way to make a quick cover using HH66 vinyl Cement, but it won’t last more than a couple of years at most. I use it a lot for as a waterproof under groundsheet for our rental yurts at festivals and events.

Re: Canvas and materials
If it only lasts a couple years, just buy some cotton canvas from yurtman. Treated canvas is perfectly fine the first two years, at least in an arid climate. By the third year it is definitely degrading, and very rapidly by the fourth and totally shot at the fifth. I mean done for.
