My wife and I lived in sub zero temps in Jackson Wyo for a month straight back in 1978-1979. -50 Jan 1 1979 I kid you not. It's in the weather record book Jackson Wyo if yiu care to look.

The single glazed sliding glass door in the kitchen of our little apartment had a massive ice dam on the interior side. You wouldn't believe it unless you saw it. We couldn't use the door. Frozen shut.

That's a good example of what happens when anything soaked with moisture hits very cold surfaces. The materials just sit there, frozen solid, until the phase change back to a gas where air flow can carry off the moisture.
