Roof and Exterior Wall Replacement
Hi, hoping someone can give me some direction here. We are in the process of moving my Dad's old yurt from it's current location to central Colorado. The original cover was canvas and is long gone. The current cover is about 8 years old and hasn't been maintained well resulting in a large rip among other problems.

My main question is where to source the material to make a new cover. We want to use a synthetic, uv resistant material (I keep seeing PVC coated vinyl?). The yurt was imported from Mongolia so it doesn't match any ready made covers that we can find.

Has anyone made their own cover? What material did you use and why?

Thanks for any advice!

Good job Steve.

I have made three yurt covers from treated cotton canvas, and poly/cotton painters tarps. This last one is 6.5 years old and torn to shreds, worse than yours. My son got me 37 yards of treated cotton canvas for Christmas, plus a 20x24 21 oz treated cotton canvas tarp for the roof. so I will be making another as soon as I get a sewing machine.

Juki 1541s with servo motor and table. I made the others with my Moms old Singer portable. Never again, that was hell.

Re: Roof and Exterior Wall Replacement
Canvas is definitely your short life cover IF you leave the yurt up year around. Five years of continuous exposure to the sun and wind here in CO mine was shot. Really, three years is closer to a full on rain without issue like drips. So any non canvas fabric, like 'sunbrella' for example, would probably last longer. That's just a guess though I haven't used it. Professional yurt covers have 3X the life if not more.

Cotton canvas wall tents WILL last a lifetime as stated by manufacturers, but that is with a month of use each year or less, and with proper fully dry storage out of the sun.
Imagine leaving your canvas tarp out over the woodpile for five years straight. You'll get the picture about canvas.

Re: Roof and Exterior Wall Replacement
Thanks Bob - BTW,

Sewn on a 1954 Singer 301 (souped up) with black exterior marine grade thread (used for sewing sail cloth).

The Roof is heat seamed -Flame retardant Tan 18 0z. Vinyl Coated (not laminated!) Polyester.

Valance strip is sewn on - Black 1680D Ballistic Nylon, with double nickel grommets every 12" - inner and outer cinch cords are 550 para cord.

Wall cover hangs on inner cinch cord with "s" hooks and grommets or jib hanks and rivets - Fabric is 'Desert Sand' UV treated shade mesh (to preserve breathability) over the existing yurt wall covers, I use Textilene 90. https://www.ebay.com/i/330440954081?...iABEgIVoPD_BwE

Still haven't found a rope better than horse hair! Beautiful stuff.
