NEVER say "the worst" or someone will do it just to prove you wrong.

but you are right, we use so much glue to join the layers together, the glue drips on the floor when we clamp them. I would say about 2 to 3 pints of clue per ring.

I am glad to see you didn't come out swinging against whoever built it. But it is clear to anyone that builds yurts, this ring should never have left the building and you should be thankful it came down with no one in it.

I hope the maker of the yurt will stand behind it, but if that is how they "normally" do their rings, history will repeat itself.

Wanna know what a tough ring can withstand? I built three yurt rings, one for a 14' one for a 16' and one for a 12' all the same design. (totally different build than this two ply 2X) The bonding surfaces were entirely covered with Titebond before being assembled with screws. How much glue? I had to wipe off excess glue everywhere. I don't mess around if something gets glued, I glue the snot out of it prior to assembly. Think building a laminated stickbow.

So, how tough was that ring? Well my first yurt was unanchored, and a massive blizzard picked it up like a teacup and launched it 25 yards through the air before slamming into the earth. The yurt completely blew apart when it landed and the wind ripped it to pieces. Looked like a crashed WWI bomber. A jumbled pile of ripped fabric and busted sticks.

The ring was undamaged, completely intact with several rafters still in their slots. I could easily have reused it. However I increased the diameter of the next yurt to where I needed 4 additional rafters so that ring got chainsawed into firewood.

You should be able to land a helicopter on top of your yurt.

The Yurt-community is generally small and I assume, that most interested people are more into real life actions than in cyber activities. Exceptions are the people, who are working from business side a lot online and can keep beside an small focus to their hobbies too....

Most prospects as buyer will register in forums like this for collecting information, but after they have build their Yurt, they are busy into operating it.

Only if a problem occurs they are finding the way back for discussing and solving their difficulties.

Just a small excursion with my thoughts to your statement about a joke column and increasing traffic with, Bob.

But back to the theme:

The TE mentioned a "Snow-Kit", but didnīt explain the details.

In my opinion should an "Snow-Kit", which want to earn its name seriously, include:

Center-Pole(s)
Perimeter-Rafter-Support
Perimeter-Blocking
Rafter-Blocking
Metal-Brackets on the joints (Rafter > Center-Ring and Rafter > Perimeter-Rafter-Support)

Interested into your opinions.....

I don't have the numbers now, but when I found the snow load requirements in my area which IIRC was based on snow PSF, my yurt exceeded them without the center pole. We have years where we get snow like that picture above. Of course, I have never let it go the entire season that way. Even in the hardest winters, I have snowshoed or snowmobiled into the yurt and gotten the fire going which cleared the yurt.

This year was more mild when it came to snow load for us up here in Northern Central New York. I have attached a couple pics of one of the times I snowshoed in.

I suppose someday I will be too old to do that and will have to pay someone to do it.

It would take a monster snowload to colladpse one of my yurt rings. If that should happen though, I'd drink half a bottle of vodka, and dump out the last half on its remains, and set it ablaze in its honor. Give it a proper Viking funeral.
