Default Building my own SIPS???

Looking to construct our 30' yurt this summer on an elevated deck. Is it possible or recommended to build my own SIPS to save $$$. here's the plan. 3/4'' tongue and groove plywood as base then put 4-6" of styrofoam on top, then top that all off with 3/4' tongue and groove plywood again to form the SIP? Good idea or not?

What did you use.

Our elevation is 7250' and it gets cold but not nasty -0 degrees cold.

Thoughts?

Dan

That's all SIPS really are....
How do you plan to adhere the foam to the plywood?
If you go ahead and do this, I'm really interested in seeing pictures of the results!

I checked at my local Home Depot and they make an adhesive specific to styrofoam and wood.

I may try it on a small piece and see how it goes.

Will def. post pics on how it went.

I say you go for it. But I just want to give you a heads up if you never heard this before-I wish someone had told us.
Carpenter Ants LOVE styrofoam! If you have them where you live they will find a way to build their nest out of your platform. We realized after it was too late. They had entrances in all cardinal directions and no ant killer in the world would get to them because they made sure the queens where in the center of the platform (right under our woodstove!) They even started to chew into the OSB, but luckily never made it through. After two years we moved the yurt and when we took apart the SIPs I have never seen anything like it...the entire 19' diameter platform was an ant farm!
SO make sure that yours in SEALED all the way around so their is no way they can get to the styrofoam.

Good to know. Always wanted an ant farm. That sounds like the King Ranch of ant farms!
