Yurt comparison

We are considering a purchase of a 24 ft yurt from one of these two/threecompanies. We are located in Ontario, Canada (so the Canadian company has a pro for this). We are also looking at Yurta (for a 21 ft) newly designed model. We are a family of 4 (2 young kids). Any recommendations or advice from previous experiences are welcome!
- specifically; - windows(glass vs, plastic), lofts(is it possible?), different materials and life span or breathability, overall quality of yurt.

A 24' yurt does allow for a loft inside, but I wouldn't try to make it too big because it will make the lower area feel more closed in.

The fabric windows work well, but during the coldest parts of winter (particularly in a northern climate) you may want to cover some of them with insulated window covers to minimize heat loss. The Low E glass windows will provide better insulating capacity and allow you to easily open and close the window from inside the yurt. If you start out with the fabric windows and decide to upgrade later on, the glass windows can be retrofit into the fabric window locations.

Are you planning to use your Yurt as a four-season dwelling? Basically – are you planning to live in it permanently? If so - snow / wind rating combined with

insulation

is going to dictate the nature of your Yurt. For permanent Yurts, we always recommend a

Durolast

Roof ™ and deluxe snow / wind kit (vertical supports at every rafter with structural brackets at every frame point). Rafter and base blocking will increase the snow rating even further if necessary.

Have you given any thought to your environmental controls (Heat / AC)?

Insulation

will be a given if you plan to heat the Yurt.

Do you have any plans for the platform the Yurt will sit on? An insulated platform is also necessary if you plan to heat.

A 20’ or 21’ diameter is quite small for a family of four, but that is certainly personnel preference. A sleeping loft is possible in a 24’ Yurt with 7’ walls – which could help meet your space requirements.
