Default Yurt floor size

Hello fellow circle lovers,

I have a 5m mongolian yurt that I am putting up on a 6m platform cut into a hillside. We would like to have some room to move around the yurt and were planning on building a large deck about 7m x 6.5m to put the yurt on. I understand the yurt canvas has to hang down to prevent water coming in. We were suggested to do a secondary raised deck above the first, which would effectively be a 'waste' of the timber on the main deck, but would have an added

insulation

factor. The other thought was to cut a circle into the deck so the edge of the canvas fell through the boards and onto the joists.

My question is this: What is the best way to put a yurt onto a deck that is larger than the yurt footprint?

Thank you!

Erect your 5 meter yurt on a tarp. Fold the edge of the tarp up under the yurt cover on the outside of the wall lattice. Snug the cover and tarp to the wall with a low rope that encircles the bottom of the wall. The resultant 'bathtub floor' and will keep water out of the yurt.

That’s an idea I had not thought of- thank you Bob!
I live in New Zealand where the winters see a lot of rain- how would I mitigate water damage to the deck as I would be concerned with the water seeping under the tarp through capillary action and then rotting the wood.

I'd paint the deck with two good coats of exterior grade paint. That's what I did on my yurt deck.
